Style Bath & Kitchen

Industrial designers keep pushing the boundaries of modern design in the kitchen. This month's Style Trends takes a look at a few exciting new products for the kitchen that balance design with function.

Modern Heat
When an item is well designed the most mundane object can become a thing of beauty. Case in point is the Thermastone range by Mercury. The Thermastone range combines  modern industrial design with handcrafted artisanship helping to bring a whole new level of design to the kitchen. The Thermastone is a bit different then most ranges in the US marketplace as it is stripped of the over sized controls & gauges which are common on many of today's trophy appliances. The range is controlled by handles on the front of the unit which operate very similar to a throttle on a motorcycle.  The simple twist of the wrist can send the range burners from an ultra low simmer to a very high temperature. The Thermastone operates with ovens that are always on, similar to the classic Aga ranges. You choose one of the four ovens based on the desired temperature that you need, with  varying degrees of heat pre-set for each chamber. Each oven is also slotted to accept the most common sizes of commercial pans, making it very easy to stack various dishes in the ovens. The Thermastone also features a French top, allowing you to cook at multiple heat settings on the same surface. Superb control, modern styling and premium materials all add up to create a thing of beauty at home in any modern kitchen.

Que bella...

The Om wall hood is one of those products that force you to peek behind the shiny glass front to figure out exactly what it is. The Om is the brainchild of the Italian ventilation company, Elica. In visiting Elica's website you quickly realize that the company enjoys a certain joi de' vivre.  After all, any appliance manufacture that puts out its own co-ed swimsuit calendar is not your run of the mill appliance company. The Om is both sexy and sleek. The vent uses touch controls virtually eliminating any knobs or visible controls. It was designed in collaboration with Bang & Olufsen designer David Lewis, giving it a very restrained and minimalist aesthetic. As kitchen ventilation goes, it is best suited for light to medium duty cooking, as the power of the vent is not what you might want over a pro cook top . The Om is made for those who enjoy making a design statement without compromising on quality and functionality. So the next time your Alessi tea kettle fills your kitchen with steam, you may want to consider the Om vent as your solution.

German Cooling

Gaggenau  is a name that is synonymous with a high caliber of both performance and design in the kitchen. Gaggenau has been widening the breadth of their offerings in the US and are now producing some of the sleekest refrigerator units on the market. Their refrigerators come in a wide variety of sizes and configurations. They also offer hinges that open up to a range of 115 degrees, while supporting weight of up to 220lbs. This allows you to completely integrate the refrigerator into just about any built-in environment. The ability to then clad the doors panels with custom fronts helps to make the units virtually invisible in the kitchen. The Gaggenau refrigerator also features individual compressor and evaporator allowing each section to cool itself, the freezer does not cool the refrigerator. This eliminates any transference of odor from the freezer to the refrigerator and vice-versa. The interior is clad in stainless steel adding to the look of the units while also making the interiors virtually indestructible. So if the budget allows, you may want to take a look at Gaggenau's latest refrigerator collection.
