Common Springtime Toxicities to Cats and Dogs

We're informing our client base again because we're seeing too many accidental pet poisonings. Lilies are EXTREMELY toxic to cats, and they include the these varieties: Easter Lily, tiger lily, rubrum lily, Japanese show lily, stargazer lily, Asiatic hybrid lily, and the common Day lily but not the peace lily (since it's not a real lily!).

Automotive or plumbing antifreeze, which contains ethylene glycol, is also HIGHLY toxic. Not only is it perceived by animals as a sweet syrup, it takes only a couple of sips by domestic pets or wildlife to kill.

The chemicals in both lillies and antifreeze cause kidney failure within hours. If ingestion is suspected, please call us immediately. Treatment can be successful if caught early. We are available for emergencies after hours.

A Rise in Canine Leptospirosis Cases

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease of dogs and other mammals, including humans, that affects the liver or kidneys. The rise in number of cases seen in the Greater Toronto Area is attributed to changes in weather patterns, presence of urban wildlife hosts (rats, and
ESPECIALLY RACCOONS), new virulent strains, and contaminated water & refuse.

Ingestion of infected urine or rodent-contaminated garbage is the most important means of transmission, but some forms of the bacteria can penetrate damaged or thin skin. For instance, when dogs swim in contaminated water, they may become infected through their skin. Infected or recovered "carrier" dogs can also act as a source of the disease.

The presentation of leptospirosis in your pet may vary: From general malaise, fever, muscle aches, to overt bleeding disorders, jaundice, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and excessive drinking and urination.

Leptospirosis can be diagnosed via blood and urine tests, and can be treated if caught early in the course of disease. Prevention is managed both by vaccination to maintain good immunity, as well as effective pest control and limiting contact between your pet and contaminated waters.

Laser Surgery at Kingston Road

Laser technology reduces the trauma to your pet, improves recovery, and often shortens hospital stays. Ask if your pet's surgical procedure can be done with a laser!

Day Lillies

Day Lillies are toxic to your pets.

Raccoon

Raccoons are carriers of leptospirosis.

Did you know human leptospirosis is a common illness among triathletes?

Leptospirosis can be transmitted to people from their pets, so owners of dogs that may have the disease should avoid contact between the owner’s bare skin and their dog’s urine.

The organism is readily killed by household disinfectants or dilute bleach solution.
