Springtime Brings Fleas and
Mosquitoes
Warming weather brings
alive fleas and mosquitoes. Fleas are a not only a nuisance but are a major cause of allergic skin disease in pets, and mosquitoes are carriers of
the Dirofilaria parasite that causes heartworm. Heartworm disease is caused by worms living in the heart and arteries of the lungs, leading
to serious damage to the heart and arteries.
Recent changes in weather patterns as well as migration and adoption of pets from the
Southern U.S. as a result of Hurricane Katrina have dramatically increased the incidence of heartworm (carried by
mosquitoes) detection and potential spread in Southern Ontario.

Lily Toxicity: April Showers Bring May
Flowers
Lilies are EXTREMELY toxic to cats, and they
include the these varieties: Easter Lily, tiger lily, rubrum lily, Japanese show lily, stargazer lily, Asiatic hybrid lily, and the common day
lily but not the peace lily.
Ingestion of a small piece of
leaf or flower of the lily will cause gastrointestinal signs (vomiting, drooling, red and irritated lips and oral tissue, and nausea) within 6
hours. If detoxification is not started immediately, the feline patient may develop severe kidney failure within days.
Spring Fever Also Rouses Garage
Do-It-Yourselfers
If you’re doing
your own automotive repairs, fluid replacement, or just tidying up your garage, please ensure all clean and waste automotive liquids are
cleanly and properly disposed of.
The active agent in automotive or plumbing antifreeze, ethylene glycol, is highly toxic. Not only
is it perceived as a sweet syrup, it takes only a couple of sips by domestic pets or wildlife to kill via rapid onset kidney
failure.
