Happy Summer!
June, oh June, where have you gone? I knew that July was going to be crazy this year, but I didn't anticipate how busy June would be. In addition to preparing for, going to and returning from the Bead & Button Show, it seems like all of the magazines have deadlines this month. And there's a ton of stuff to prepare for the upcoming taping of Beads, Baubles & Jewels. And there are workshop proposals to finalize. More coffee, please!

Same idea as before, but we
freshened things up a bit.
charm description
This is a charm bracelet that I'm putting together for
my daughter, Lily. Read about it on my Blog.

I especially enjoyed receiving letters from readers about their own crafty endeavors. One of my favorite stories was from a grandmother whose lifelong hobby of collecting charms has resulted in a massive bracelet that is so heavy she can no longer wear it. She's thinking of dividing it into separate bracelets for her children.
What a cool heirloom gift!

So Long,
Creativity E-letter

I'm sad to report that I'll no longer be writing the Creativity e-letter for DRG Publishing. Creativity will now be associated with GiftMaker magazine and will be written by that publication's editor, Amy Wiegman.

Back issues of the e-letter are available for free download on the Annie's Attic Web site and at GiftMaker.com.

Recent topics included artist trading cards, organizing your crafting space, heirloom gifts, and more. I plan to keep on writing, so keep an eye out for future updates!

Bead & Button Show Trend Spotting
I noticed a lot of black beads at the show this year, including an abundance of lava rock beads. I like lava beads because they're lightweight, made from a renewable resource and they fit quite nicely into my chunky bead obsession.

There weren't as many piles of sterling and fine silver beads as there have been in years past, presumably because of the high price of silver. However, I did notice that quite a few booths were selling Precious Metal Clay and Art Clay Silver.

There's a lot of collaboration going on in the world of bead artists. A cool example is the marketing and education effort by a group of ceramic bead makers called Beads of Clay.

Chain is still super popular and available in many different incarnations. The styles that caught my eye were big hammered links, handmade PMC chain and Beadalon's new polyester chain.

A lot of shoppers took the opportunity to stock up on inexpensive gemstone strands, brightly colored geometric shell shapes, vintage Czech glass, copper beads & findings and other manufactured beads.

Bead Show Goodies
Here are some of my goodies from the show.
Ceramic beads from Earthenwood Studio,
Glass wheel bead from Proper,
Enamel toggle clasp from C.Koop,
Heart Padlock & key from MB Imports
Memory Frames from Ranger Ink,
Shells & lava from Black Market Minerals.

New books abound on beading and jewelry making, including Margot Potter's Sparkletastic, Candie Cooper's
Felted Jewelry and Brenda Schweder's
Junk to Jewelry
. I can't wait to see forthcoming books by ceramic bead artist Jennifer Heynen of Jangles, lampworker Stephanie Sersich and chainmail expert Susan C. Thomas.
