Hurry! Time is Running Out

A new Tennessee specialty plate, "Driving to a Cure" to support Susan G. Komen for the Cure and our promise to end breast cancer forever has passed the Tennessee House of Representatives. We need your help to put the plate into production.

If you are interested in purchasing one of these "pink ribbon" license plates please click here, sign the form attached and return it with your $35.00 check. This covers the annual cost of the plate that is in addition to your regular county tag fees. The Knoxville Affiliate will receive $17.50 of each plate sold.  We must reach 1000 commitments statewide before June 15, 2008 in order for the production of the license plates to begin! By signing and returning the form with your check, you have purchased one of the license plates.  (If we don't reach 1000 commitments, your money will be returned.)

Education Spotlight

"Study Shows Coffee and Tea Don't Raise Breast Cancer Risk"

In breast cancer research news, results from a decades-long study may enable women to drink coffee or tea without worry that doing so will increase their risk for breast cancer, study findings suggest. "In this large cohort of women, with 22 years of follow-up, we observed no association between coffee (caffeinated or decaffeinated) and tea consumption and the risk of breast cancer," Dr. Davaasambuu Ganmaa, of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts, told Reuters Health. ARE YOU READY For Race 2008?

Before you know it, October 11 will be here and all of us will be gathered at the Worlds Fair Park for the 12th Annual Knoxville Race for the Cure®.  I want to challenge you to grab everyone you know and join us for a great time.  I want you, at this moment, to mark your calendar to save October 11, 2008 for a day of "pinkness" as we make strides in finding a cure for breast cancer. As the first male Race Chair for the Knoxville Race, I am extending a huge challenge for all men to be there on Race day and join in the fun.  Also, previous team captains, begin to watch your email inbox for online priority registration announcements.

Yours in the Fight,

Joe Jackson - 2008 Race Chair

2008 Grantee Profile

The Knoxville Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure has granted a total of $563,052 through its 2008-09 Community Grant Program.  Each month we will be featuring one of the 501c3 organizations who have received a grant.

"Weekend Warriors" Breast Health Outreach Program

The Pastoral Care Program at UT Medical Center will collaborate with community church leaders to provide a comprehensive breast health program and access to screening mammograms for at least 25 East Tennessee churches within the Knoxville Affiliate area. The outreach efforts will include: accessibility to a user-friendly system for early detection and treatment of breast cancer; the financial means to obtain medical services related to early detection and treatment of breast cancer; and accessibility to a breast health/cancer education opportunity based on an appropriate literacy level at an accessible, familiar place. The Pastoral Care department will utilize trained community leaders from the UT Breast Health Outreach Program (BHOP) to deliver the education and will schedule the UT Medical Center mobile mammography unit to provide access to screening mammography services. The program will be provided at times convenient for the group, including evening hours and weekends to allow members and guests of community churches the opportunity to participate in a free didactic breast health program including access to screening mammograms and clinical breast exams.
