Massey's Teams Up with Stay Local!

What does a healthy business environment have to do with a healthy environment? Everything, if you ask Mike Massey.

A local business owner and native New Orleanian, Mike is opening a retail location for Massey's Professional Outfitters on North Carrollton Avenue in New Orleans in January 2008.  Mike is keenly aware of the correlation between the environment and the business climate.  His mantra is "Recreation means business."  His store's Mid-City location on the Lafitte Greenway is ideal, and he anticipates reaping the economic benefits of his location.

"The Lafitte Greenway will solidify Mid-City/City Park's position as the recreational epicenter of New Orleans," says Mike. "It also creates a funnel for tourists wanting to explore deeper into the residential parts of the city, and a jumping off point for locals who want to head downtown. Our favorite part is that the city will enjoy the option of bicycle transport through numerous neighborhoods."

Mike shares The Urban Conservancy's commitment to the Lafitte Greenway project and to creating a strong local economy through its Stay Local! initiative.  Purchase any Marmot product at Massey's online during the week of Nov. 12, and 10% goes to The Urban Conservancy. (Also honored on in-store Marmot purchases.)   Thanks, Marmot and Massey's!

Free Insurance Seminar Nov. 12

Insurance, too, is another  "environment-meets-business- climate" issue, as area business owners know all too well.

Many business owners discovered post-Katrina that they were
under-insured for their losses. Had they insured "the right way," they would have been in a better position to rebuild quickly and re-open to serve customers...and make money again.

Securing insurance is one of the greatest challenges for micro and small businesses working to get back on their feet after the 2005 hurricanes. Just figuring out who to go to, how much coverage is necessary, and what kind to buy can be overwhelming.

This free seminar, co-sponsored by LSBDC, Stay Local!, Desire NOLA and American Red Cross is intended to prepare small business owners to face disaster-related risks by understanding how to make use of business insurance and other risk mitigation methods, and by answering the following questions:

± What will protect me in the event of disaster - from power outage to flooding?

± What coverage is required? What's realistically available and
affordable for my business?

± What is the true cost of insurance? What amount of coverage matches my expectation of loss?

± How can I mitigate risk to reduce my insurance needs and/or expenses?

SPACE IS LIMITED:  PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.

The seminar is from 2:30 - 5 pm on Monday, Nov. 12 on SUNO's campus, in Trailer #43.  A campus map is attached here, or Mapquest or Google map directions by typing in a destination of 6810 Press Drive, or Press Drive at Leon C. Simon Drive.

New Orleans Unchained!

Vibrant localism.  When you get right down to it, isn't that why we all love New Orleans as much as we do? So let's do our bit to keep it vibrant!

On Saturday, November 17, join the rest of America (and Canada, too!) in a national campaign to support local businesses.  The American Independent Business Alliance is urging citizens in communities nationwide to shun chains the Saturday before Thanksgiving -- to do business only locally-owned -- and generate over three times the economic activity that day for their home towns as they would by spending money at chains. It means potentially millions of added dollars injected into the local economy on just one day!

Browse through independent bookstores and check out some of the Saturday outdoor markets going on around town. While you're at it, be sure to reaffirm your commitment to shop local all year by signing Stay Local!'s "Shop Local" pledge online or at participating businesses.  (Businesses: download this form and keep them near your register through the holiday season.)

And then keep that local shop momentum rolling!  Hit the First Annual Poboy Preservation Festival on Oak Street Sunday, November 18.  Swing by the Office of Homeland Serenity as  Festivus gets underway the first Sunday in December.  And be sure to rock and roll through the  Freret Holiday Market December 1 with great music, fresh produce, food, art, and the Big Easy Roller Girls!  If that ain't vibrant localism, I don't know what is.
