PARTHENON
West Gallery
Exhibit
The Pettest of Pets: Paintings by Erin Harmon
September 28 -January 5, 2007
Harmon’s intricate
technique, manipulation of decorative elements, and psychological self-exploration create fascinating and at times disturbing environments.
Each of Harmon’s finished works
comprises up to thirty layers of paint, suspending painted images and decorative elements
between pours of varnish. What appears at first glance to be a “pretty” painting turns out to be a psychological setting in which
Harmon’s characters, including hyper-feminine versions of herself, explore dichotomies of identity: submission and aggression; male and female; predator and prey. In both the actual and the metaphorical sense, there is a lot going
on beneath the surface.
East Gallery
Exhibit Mythos: Assemblages by
Maureen McCabe October 19 - January 12, 2007
Inspired by the
modern relevance of ancient Greek mythology, Maureen McCabe has created a series of new works for her exhibit at the Parthenon. These assemblages take the form of a three dimensional collage and can include miniatures, natural materials, small toys, and found objects.
McCabe’s works include objects collected during her travels around the globe, including a recent trip to Athens, Greece. In addition to the new assemblages she created specifically for the Parthenon venue, work from four decades of McCabe’s career will be
on view. Throughout her career, McCabe’s witty, exquisite creations have explored the themes of fortune, fate, luck, and
chance.
