RESFEST 2005
|
RESFEST is pleased to be revisting the Irish Film Institutue for the second time, and weve our biggest slate of screenings and live music events there yet. Also, weve considerably expanded our involvement with Filmbase: look for seminars, free Apple classrooms, the Woodsuch gallery, and a whole lot more.
A truly global event, RESFEST plays over 35 cities in six countries, kicking off in New York in early September. It's UK and Irish tour, supported by the British Film Institute, also takes in London, Glasgow, Dublin, Bristol, Sheffield and Nottingham.
RESFEST is all about the convergence of innovative film, music, art, design, fashion and technology. Festival activities include screenings, seminars, education sessions, live music performances, parties and interactive entertainment.
Shorts
Discover inspiring short films from new talent as well as celebrated creators like Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite), Chris Cunningham, Miguel Arteta and The Designers Republic. Programmes include: Shorts One, Two and Three, and By Design. Triple Threat, meanwhile, spotlights three of the world's most promising new talents: America's Jonnie Ross, Japan's Nagi Noda and France's François Vogel.
Music Videos
In the Festival's signature video programmes Cinema Electronica and Videos that Rock, top directors including Jonas Odell, MK12, Dom & Nic, Lobo and Michel Gondry are joined by a talented array of newcomers in creating exciting concept-driven work for bands like Interpol, Soulwax, LCD Soundsystem, The Chemical Brothers, The Flaming Lips, RJD2 and The Shins.
Feature Films
Filmmaker Doug Pray (Scratch) turn his sights to visual street culture with Infamy, an intense journey into the lives and minds of seven people obsessed with graffiti in all its forms.
Just for Kicks is a fast-paced documentary that traces the evolution of sneakers from their early adoption by the style warriors of 1970s New York City to their status today as the apparel of choice for an entire generation.
From the creators of City of God, Ginga: the soul of Brazilian football is an evocative documentary exploring Brazilians' passion for soccer.
Retrospectives: Beck, Traktor and XL Recordings
Throughout his career, Beck has engaged in compelling visual collaborations, from early videos with Steve Hanft to ground-breaking marriages of music and moving image with such luminaries as Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze, Mark Romanek, Stéphane Sednaoui, Shynola and more.
RESFEST is also pleased to present Four Seasons of Traktor - a special compendium of commercials and music videos, along with a selection of never-before-seen banned ads, director's cuts and other oddities from the award-winning Swedish mad scientists.
We have teamed up with XL Recordings to showcase the very best of the ground-breaking label's music videos. This greatest hits' style package of music videos the label has commissioned includes new and favourite work from The Prodigy, Basement Jaxx, Lemon Jelly, M.I.A. and plenty more, whilst the starry roster of directors includes Michel Gondry, Ruben Fleischer, Hammer and Tongs, and Airside.
Live Music Events - The RES Weekenders
In the first of two once-off RES Weekender events in the IFI atrium, RESFEST proudly present Jonnie Wilkes from Glaswegian party duo Optimo. From psyche rock to krautrock, and disco to acid house, the Optimo boys have rightly earned their reputation as some of the most inventive and insightful DJs on the planet. And then, after a huge weekend of music videos at the IFI - what with the Beck and XL Recordings retrospectives and the RESFEST regulars Cinema Electronica and Videos that Rock the kings of mash up Eclectic Method play our second weekender. Eclectic Methods live AV mash ups with wicked tunes, amazing visuals and an inimitable element of tongue-in-cheekiness are not to be missed.
Panels (Filmbase)
For RES Course of Action: Break Down (free), we bring filmmakers to the stage to play their work and break it down, then inviting discussions and questions from the floor. A rare opportunity to get right to the heart of short and other form filmmaking, with tips and insights from those fresh from the front line.
Our provocative Inside Music Videos panel (ticketed) poses the questions: What makes the perfect music video? What makes the perfect pitch? Join us for a conversation with music video directors, label commissioners, production companies and distributors.
Copy Fight will be a lively discussion of copyright laws, creative commons, and the future of remix / mashup culture. Featuring digital innovators and DJs and VJs, alongside legal experts.
Free Apple Classrooms
Thanks to our good friends at Filmbase and Apple, RESFEST are running free classes in Final Cut Pro at Filmbase on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons. An experience, qualified Apple instructor runs these intimate, hands on demonstrations of this crucial software package. Come to the front desk of Filmbase to register for these first come first served classes.
Festival Lounges (IFI and Filmbase)
Relax between screenings, meet other festival-goers and RESFEST filmmakers, browse the RES STORE (IFI), explore interactive exhibits and the Woodsuch Gallery (in FB), featuring works from international artists. woodsuch.com
