"I think I have been treated more fairly, and I think a number of my Republican colleagues have been treated more fairly, since
the Democrats have become the majority than I was treated by my own leadership."
-U.S. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA)

AMID VETO THREAT, CONGRESS PASSES PETROLEUM RESERVE SUSPENSION AND FARM BILLS
President George W. Bush presided over perhaps one of the largest surplus spending sprees in the
history of the United States, and now he is threatening to veto certain carefully crafted bills which would reduce the price of gasoline and domestic
food supplies.
This week the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Strategic Petroleum Reserve Fill Suspension and Consumer
Protection Act by a vote of 385-25. The vote reached
the two-thirds majority to protect it from the presidential veto threat. The House also passed the Farm Bill which passed with a two-thirds
majority to assist farmer's and their families.
Currently the Petroleum Reserves are filled to 97 percent and take approximately 70,000 barrels of oil off the
market. By placing these back into the market, some estimates say gas prices could be reduced 5 to 24 cents per gallon. In the past,
Presidents Bush Sr., Jr., and Bill Clinton have halted filling the Petroleum Reserves to combat rising gas prices.
DEMOCRATIC SPECIAL CONGRESSIONAL ELECTIONS: A HAT TRICK!
Earlier this year, Democrat Bill Foster won a special election in the Illinois Congressiona District held
by former Republican Majority Leader Dennis Hastert in a landslide. Next, Democrat Don Cazayoux swept through a conservative Louisiana
Congressional District in the second special election of 2008. In an historic third special election, in a district that George W. Bush carried with 64% of the vote, Democrat Travis
Childers became the newest member of Congress.
The special election sweeps in Illinois and the Deep South precede what looks to be a victorious year for Democrats
in Tennessee elections and in the race for the White House.
Thank you to our "special" Special Election volunteers who came to the Tennessee Democratic Party and called nearly
2,000 Mississippi households to get out the vote! Thanks to our volunteers and Democrats from surrounding states, we have one more Democrat in
Congress.

A MESSAGE FROM NEWLY ANNOUNCED CLINTON SUPERDELEGATE VICKY HARWELL
The Tennessee Federation of Democratic Women recently held their 51st convention in Knoxville,
a city rumored to know a little bit about basketball.
Welcoming the members to Knoxville were Coach Bruce Pearl, Coach Ken Johnson and
Giles County's own, #1 on the Vol men's basketball team, Tyler Smith. The Clinton campaign sent surrogate speaker, Congresswoman
Stephanie Tubb Jones who was an inspirational, motivational and dynamic speaker. In addition to local dignitaries who were featured
speakers, other visitors included Congressman Lincoln Davis, Freda Player representing the TNDP, and Bob
Tuke and Mike Padgett, candidates for U. S. Senate.
Attendance was fantastic and each meeting was standing room only. The energy and enthusiasm was contagious as the
Federation members discussed upcoming candidates and elections, organization of Democratic Women's organizations in remaining counties, grass roots
campaigning around the state, voter registrations, adoption of community projects and growing young Democrats. Fundraising was at an all time high
with excellent convention proceeds which will enable the TFDW to play an instrumental role in helping fund campaigns and elect Democratic candidates.
The TFDW has a singular purpose - to elect Democrats at all levels.
The Democratic Women of Tennessee are "marching" to victory. Knoxville was the most recent stop in our "march"
...... next we "march" to Albuquerque, New Mexico the last week of May for the National Federation of Democratic Women's Convention .... and our
"march" continues on to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in November!
We are proud to be affiliated with the Tennessee Democratic Party and look forward to working together to ensure
the victory of all our Democratic candidates.
Vicky Harwell
President, Tennessee Federation of Democratic Women
