Strolling on the Streets of Paris,
Singing on our Stage
Jazz vocalist Madeleine Peyroux has earned a name for
herself among jazz enthusiasts of all ages, so it's no surprise that tickets
for her upcoming concert on June 9th are selling as fast as the
tickets for Joshua Bell's sold-out concert last February. Peyroux will take the
Wisconsin Union Theater stage as part of the Isthmus Jazz Fest on the Terrace.
This is the only ticketed show of the four-day event and it begins at 8:30pm.
Peyroux, pronounced like Peru,
burst onto the music scene in 1996 with her debut album Dreamland. Careless Love followed in 2004. "This album evokes the
restless after-hours mood of strolling on the streets of Paris,"
wrote The Daily Standard. Her latest
album, Half the Perfect World, was
released in September 2006 and includes various covers and four original
tunes.
Tickets for the show are available by clicking here.

From the Editor:
Good Times in Lafayette
I have so much fun at work sometimes!
Together with other representatives of arts presenting
organizations, I was invited in April to the 21st Festival
International de Louisiane in Lafayette, Louisiana.
The organizers treated us to VIP access to fantastic music, great food, and an
opportunity to check out and meet artists and other presenters from all over
the world. It was a great opportunity to see how a long-running and much larger
festival than our World Music Festival operates.
I listened to many hours of music each day, ate great Cajun
and Creole food, met interesting people, danced...and learned. We are now considering
implementing some of the things that can work for our festival too. We're also
likely to present some of the artists who performed there. One group we hope to
have here in September is Dragon Knights, otherworldly stilt walkers/puppet
masters who enlivened the Lafayette festival with their unique, fairy world costumes and arts. Amazing entertainment for the whole family.
And the learning wasn't just one way: Lafayette's
most successful act, drawing 10,000 people and causing huge excitement, was
Balkan Beat Box, visiting that festival for the first time. We, as you may
remember, discovered them a while ago--they were the hottest act in our festival
in 2005.

It's Summer! Now What
Will We Do With All This Time On Our Hands?
Finals are just around the corner on campus, the snow is
finally gone for good, and all of us are pulling out last year's shorts and
trying to see if we can fit our "winter bodies" into them. These events can
only mean one thing....summer is here! Here at the Union Theater several of the
staff members have some really wild and crazy summer plans! O.K., maybe they
aren't that wild (or crazy), but they are newsletter-worthy! Esty is gearing up for a big move....down the
hall! After the recent reallocation of the Theater Box Office, we have a new
space for her beautiful, sunny new office. The ever outgoing Bruce was
surprisingly reluctant to share all
his summer plans, but I did get him to share with me this estimate, "I will be
working this summer." Claire shared that her plans for summer are to "make sock
monkeys." I have no idea what sock monkeys are, but I hope she has a very fun
time. As for me, I will be taking advantage of my recently acquired Hoofer
Sailing membership and I will be learning to sail and windsurf (and probably
touch up on my swimming skills in the process). On behalf of everyone here at
the Wisconsin Union Theater, I wish you all a safe and fun summer and hope to
see you around the Union!

Seun Kuti and Egypt

The Revolution Continues
Can't wait until the Madison World Music Festival in
September to hear some extraordinary world music? You're not alone!
Seun Kuti, son of the late, legendary Fela Kuti, will be
bringing his politically infused afro-funk beats with Egypt
80 to the theater on Wednesday, June 27th at 8:30pm. Seun Kuti, an accomplished saxophonist, is now
the front man of Egypt
80, the group that his father founded in the 1970s. Fela was one of the most
outspoken and prominent figures in the Nigerian and African political music
scene; Seun is committed to keeping his father's spirit and music alive, but
wants to update his father's political message.
"I want to make Afrobeat for my generation. Instead of
'get up and fight,' it's going to be 'get up and think,'" he says.
"My generation's not thinking. It's not really our fault. My father's
generation f*#@d everything up. And we haven't been brought up to put it right.
'Apparently, they weren't parents,'" he adds, quoting Eminem.
Expect a dynamic and funky show from Seun and his 22 piece
group. Seun's muscular sax combined with explosive percussion, punching brass
and rolling bass lines will be sure to move you out of your seats and into the
aisles! To purchase tickets, click here.

Anoushka, Idan and
the New Women of Jazz: Claire's Picks
In the next few
months, various members of the Theater staff will highlight their three picks
of next season.
Okay, so this is actually harder than it looks! Seriously,
with so many top notch performers, it took me awhile to come up with my top
three picks, but voila:
A legend in her own
right: Anoushka Shankar, with her "Rise" Project will be at the theater on
Friday, October 5 at 8pm. I saw her
perform with her father, Ravi, at the, ahem, Overture
Center, a couple of weeks ago and was
blown away by her virtuosity and intensity. Expect to see a brilliant, skilled,
and innovative performance. Believe me, she lives up to these words! See for
yourself.
From Israel to
Ethiopia to Madison. If you are looking for some
enchanting cross cultural rhythms, do we have the artist for you! The Idan
Raichel Project will be here on Wednesday, November 7 at 8pm. I've been listening to Raichel's cds and, to be
honest, I've never heard anything quite like this before. He mixes poetic
lyrics in Hebrew and Amharic with these raw, ambient, and ethereal sounds of
keyboards, guitars, flutes, and percussion. Yotze min haclal!
Gretchen Parlato and
Esperanza Spalding. These two hot new names in jazz will illuminate the stage
on Friday, February 15, 2008.
Parlato has a uniquely exquisite and enticing voice. I agree with David
Steinberg of the Albuquerque Journal who says, "Rarely does a jazz singer come
along whose voice instantly sweeps you off your feet." Spalding, referred to as
the "ace of bass" by the Boston Globe, is all fun energy when she plays. I
can't wait to see both of them together. Hope to see you there too!

Meet our staff: Janet Trembley
She's the graphic designer for the entire Memorial Union. To
see a sample of her beautiful work, click
here.
What made you want to become a graphic designer, and how
long have you been at it... here and elsewhere?
I chose graphic design as a career because it allows me to
do art every day and get paid! My other jobs (in the twelve years I've been
doing this) include working for UW-Eau Claire, Famous Footwear, Knupp &
Watson, and Jones Books.
Do you express your own creative powers at work and, if so,
how?
Graphic design is ultimately a job of problem solving. What I find most fun and
creative about the work is discovering the most dynamic and appropriate
artistic solution for a project.
What do you like the most about your job?
My favorite part of the job is the people I work with. The marketing department
is full of fun people who are great at their jobs.
How are the Theater's publications unique from what you
generally produce for the Memorial Union?
One of the ways the Theater's publications are unique is in their volume. The
Theater puts on an extraordinary amount of events so there are always ads,
posters or web updates to be made. There is rarely a day I'm not working on a
few projects for the Theater.
What do you like to do when you are not working here?
When not at the office, I enjoy reading, gardening, and collecting art.
