As anticipated, this year's golf scramble set a new record for funds raised for professional development.

"Our goal was $30,000," said Doug Edwards, this year's committee chair, "and we were all over it."  Officially, the outing raised $29,300 for the benefit of our members' professional development.

Mentor program set for fall start-up

MT|SHRM's Mentor Program partners a student member of MTSU, TSU or Lipscomb University's student chapter with a professional member for the purpose of mutual growth and development as HR professionals.

The MT|SHRM Mentor Program will begin in October 2007 and continue through May 2008. Commitment will involve monthly meetings with the students, a round table event and a job shadowing event.

The mentor program allows students get some exposure to HR in the real world and provides direction for future focus in specific areas of HR.  Not only does the program give the students an idea of what to expect when they graduate and enter the work force, it also provides an outlet for members of MT|SHRM to share their experience and ideas about work in the HR field.

For additional information or to volunteer as a mentor, contact Kasia Urban by Friday, October 12.

Fourth Annual "Best Employers in Tennessee"

The Tennessee State SHRM Council is continuing its partnership with Business TN Magazine and the Tennessee State Chamber of Commerce in supporting the fourth annual competition naming the "Best Employers in Tennessee."  Earlier this year, the Best Employers in Tennessee list for 2007 was published in the May issue of Business TN Magazine.

The search is on to find the companies that will make the 2008 list.  Registration deadline is November 9, 2007.  The companies that make the 2008 list will be profiled in a special issue of Business TN Magazine and will be recognized at a special celebration event to be held in the spring.

The Best Employers in Tennessee initiative is similar to the famous Fortune magazine list announcing the "100 Best Employers in America." In addition to the positive effect the award has on employee relations and recruitment, the driving force for companies to participate is the remarkable effect that workplace improvements can have on their bottom line.

The selection process is based on an assessment of the company's employee policies and procedures and the results of a 65 question employee survey.  After the process is complete, all participating companies will receive their Assessment Findings Reports which summarizes and sorts employee feedback and includes Tennessee benchmarking data with which to compare.

Deadline for registration is November 9, 2007. Further details about the program and registration information can be found online at www.BestEmployersTN.com or by calling Best Companies Group at 877-455-2159.
