Conquering the Potato Chip
(Or, How to Get Your Board and Administrators on Board with Marketing)

In anticipation of our next Nonprofit 911, we’d like to share some words of wisdom from our speaker Tiffany Meyer about conquering the potato chip. (No, this is not a tips article about diets!)

Enjoy!

Conquering the Potato Chip
For many grassroots and cause-oriented nonprofits in particular, the term "marketing" can conjure up what I call the "potato chip syndrome"- people trying to sell me something I simply don't need just for the sake of making money. The discomfort arises because it puts a nonprofit leader's values in question: "I'm here to make a difference in the world, not to make money."

If you struggle obtaining buy-in for your marketing program budget, just sharing the cold hard facts about potential financial results may not be enough.

It's time to a take a different approach by putting these five keys to action. Buy-in begins with a shift in perception - starting with the potato chip:

  1. Key 1: Shift perception - Marketing is our friend
  2. Key 2: Deliver efficiency
  3. Key 3: Start with needs
  4. Key 4: Stay flexible, yet focused
  5. Key 5: Communicate results as impact statements

Our "Education" Category Free Promotion Winner !
At the beginning of the summer, we told you that we'd like to invite nonprofit organizations to submit (in 91 words or fewer) a description of how they are using the Internet in a unique/powerful/clever way to fundraise and/or market online.

Thanks to all of our nonprofits in the Education category who submitted fantastic entries!

Our winner is... Discovery Museum at the Powerhouse! Currently under development, the museum will include an interactive science and energy center for all ages. According to their nomination, this expansion project of the Children’s Museum of Durango:

  • Is working to develop a live-action “webisode” series to tell the story of a bunch of kids who tire of waiting for the grownups to open the Powerhouse. This series provides both education and entertainment via the Web.
  • Increased their email mailing list by 25 percent since the beginning of 2008 to distribute “The Circuit,” their e-newsletter.
  • Raised thousands of dollars this year through their strategically placed donate button.
