This is the Time for Schools to Think About State Discretionary Funding Asks

Through your local state lawmaker, charter school leaders can submit funding requests for $5,000 to $10,000 in one-time discretionary funding "asks" to be used for purchasing books, computers and other school-related needs.

State lawmaker typically accept these funding requests in January. However, schools need not wait until then to identify funding needs and submit their funding requests. The funds are disbursed in 2008 and used by lawmakers to fund community projects in their district.

We encourage interested charter school leaders to contact their local lawmakers and make known their intent to submit a funding request. For more information on discretionary funding and how the Center can assist schools with applying for funds, please contact Jeff Maclin.

Non Profit/Small Business Clinic at Columbia and Charter School Partnership

The Center is looking for 6-10 schools or planning teams to partner with Columbia University Law School's non profit/small business clinic.  The clinic handles the range of organizational and business issues, “friends of”, 501(c)(3) filings, copyright, contracts etc.  This support will be free and supervised by licensed attorneys.  If this program goes well we will investigate creating a charter school specific clinic in the coming years at Columbia.  Please contact Dirk Tillotson for more information.
More information about the clinic can be found at: http://www.law.columbia.edu/focusareas/clinics/ngo

Attributes of a Quality Teacher-Focus Group
Your input is needed!  School leaders and human resource personnel are invited to discuss the attributes they desire in teacher candidates to help the Center better plan and recruit for the 2008 job fair.

WHEN: Monday, October 22 (5:30-7:00 pm)
WHERE: Center Training Room, 111 Broadway
Please RSVP to Tasha Ginn or call 212-437-8359 by Thursday, October 18.

FMA – Borough Audit Workshop
Audit trainings are coming to you! Fiscal Management Associates (FMA) will lead an internal controls audit workshop for charter schools in their borough, in November. The content of the workshops will be sharing and learning fiscal practices from other charter schools, preparation for the State Comptroller's Audit, and understanding and responding to an external auditor’s findings under SAS 112 provisions. The workshop will be in peer learning format, where you will share stories and practices on handling SAS 112 letters, implementation of fiscal controls such as petty cash and inventory management. While the workshop will be facilitated by FMA, the goal is for schools to learn from (and meet) each other. All participants are asked to bring copies of their current fiscal policies and procedures. The Center will provide food and beverages.

The workshops will take place on November 6, 7, and 8 at a different borough each night (Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan). We need one school per borough to volunteer their space (a small classroom to hold about 10-20 people) for either the 6th, 7th, or 8th of November. The time of the workshop (preferably in the evening) can be set by the school. If you are interested in volunteering your school to host a workshop, please email Vinice Davis which date you will host. More information regarding date and location will be sent to the Operations Listserv and the next CLN. To rsvp for a workshop, please email Vinice Davis by 10/26.

2008 Job Fairs
Begin planning now to recruit staff for the 2008-09 school year.  There are several job fairs listed on the Center’s events page (http://nycchartercenter.org/events.asp)
