Dear Ilise,
I know how tempting it is to take all the work that comes along, even if you have that sneaky feeling that
it's not your "ideal" project.
That's why, in today's tip, I'm giving you 3 of the 10 reasons to turn down a project:
- Unrealistic schedules. The job is yours for the asking but they want it done faster than
you've ever done it before.
- Major mismatch. Your specialty is quality work but your customer is a penny pincher who
treats you like a commodity.
- Dangling carrots. Don't be fooled by the promise of lucrative future work "if you'll just
do this one job for nothing."
Believe me, sometimes it costs you more to say "yes" than "no."
This is from Chapter 9 of my new book, The Art of Self Promotion, where you'll find the
other 7 reasons to say "no, thanks." Also, I've recorded Chapter 1 and you can listen to it here.
On the same topic, David Baker or ReCourses. had a great article last week called, "Saying No or Caring Too
Much About the
Wrong Things." An
excellent read if you suspect you're one of those who care too much. Read that here.
