Women & Leadership Archives
Lecture Series
The Women & Leadership Archives is seeking presenters for their
2008-2009 lecture series highlighting interdisciplinary scholarship on women. We provide interested faculty, graduate, and undergraduate
students with this forum to present their work to their colleagues in a comfortable and encouraging setting.
Presentations will take place once a month on weekday afternoons
and run for an hour. Dates for presentations are flexible and all will be a brown bag lunch event. Presenters are expected to speak for
approximately thirty to forty minutes, with the remaining time devoted to a discussion of the work.
We are holding open submissions throughout the year and encourage
anyone working on gender-related issues to consider presenting. We welcome students and faculty from any discipline and any department.
Students interested in presenting should submit a one-page abstract to Ashley Eckhardt
at: or the Women and Leadership Archives. Abstracts should include a description of the paper, a
summary of the argument, and any additional materials needed to present, i.e. projector, VCR, or PowerPoint hook-up.
Abstracts can also be dropped off at the Women & Leadership Archives, located on the third floor of Piper Hall,
or the WLA mailbox on the second floor of Piper Hall.
The 2008 Edward Surtz
Lecture
"Religious Liberty in
Seventeenth-Century England: A Case Study in Secularization," is the topic of the 33rd annual Edward Surtz Lecture at Loyola, to be delivered by
Michael McKeon, Board of Governors Professor of Literature at Rutgers University, on Tuesday, October 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Crown
Center for the Humanities on Loyola’s Lake Shore Campus, 6525 N. Sheridan Rd., Chicago. The lecture is free and open to the public, and it will
be followed by a reception.
Among Professor McKeon’s many publications are The Origins of the English Novel, 1600-1740 (1987), for which the Modern Language
Association awarded him its prestigious James Russell Lowell Prize. A 15th anniversary edition with a new introduction appeared in 2002. In 2005 he
published The Secret History of Domesticity: Public, Private, and the Division of Knowledge. For this volume he received the Professional and
Scholarly Publishing Award of the Association of American Publishers.
Professor McKeon received his doctorate from Columbia University in 1972 after study at the University of Chicago and Cambridge University. From
1971 to 1988 he taught at Boston University, and since 1988 he has served on the faculty of Rutgers University
The Surtz Lectures were inaugurated in 1976, in memory of the late Edward Surtz, S.J., an internationally renowned scholar of Renaissance thought
and literature who spent most of his career as a member of Loyola’s Department of English. The lectures are intended to address some aspect of
the relationship between Christianity and culture.
For further information, please contact Professor Pauline Viviano of Loyola’s Department of
Theology, chair of the Surtz Lecture Committee at (773)-508-2346.

"Part laboratory and part concert freebie, Dance
Chance, an ever-changing monthly outing at the Ruth Page Center for the Arts, shows off small works and invites the audience to offer
feedback."
Monday, September 15, 6pm-7pm: Dance Chance featuring Mollie Mock, Amanda Timm, and Lauren Stewart with Dionna PridGeon,

session providing an opportunity for choreographers to discuss their work and process, as well as time for the audience to ask
questions.
Guest Moderator: Kevin Reed, visual artist
At the end of each Dance Chance, the next trio of participants will be chosen
from names submitted by choreographers in attendance. The event, held in the intimate theater of the Ruth Page Center, located at 1016 N.
Dearborn and is FREE and open to the public.
NEW: In our continuing effort to promote dance and build community, those with upcoming

Mixing It Up With
Politics
A one night only event highlighting LUMA's "Art of Democracy" exhibition...
Date: Friday,
September 12, 2008 Time: 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Location: LUMA Street: 820 N Michigan Ave
City/Town: Chicago, IL
This event is being held in celebration of "The Art of Democracy" - a
new exhibition at LUMA. The exhibition, timed to coincide with the 2008 Presidential election, displays works by 50 printmakers (20 from the local
Chicagoland area) whose art is concerned with democracy, social activism and political change. The artists continue the tradition of using poster and
print media as a vehicle for social advocacy and propaganda. The exhibition is on display from September 6th - November 9th, 2008.
$5 dollars at the door gets you into the exhibition, as well as food (first come, first serve, so
get there around 7!) and two drink tickets (there will be red and white wine to choose from).
Additionally, there will be live Americana music performed by Rami Atassi, Anuj Gangopadhyaya and Carl Aagesen. As well
as Loyola's own College Democrats, College Republicans and Inside Government will be there with some useful information on the current Presidential
candidates, important campaign issues and what Democracy means to their organizations.
This event is aimed toward the "college kid" demographic and should prove to be a good time. So come spend a couple
hours on a Friday night taking in good art, good food and good live music, and bring your friends!
While it is not mandatory to r.s.v.p. it would be highly appreciated if you could send an email to Jenna Secor and/or join the event page on Facebook.

Leftovers by Renee Una |
Leftovers
Renee Una has made her work from the materials that have been in her
studio, in some cases for over 10 years. She has been carting these leftover and never used materials around think that someday she would make
art with them. The materials vary from found objects, felt, latex, fake eyes, orange powders....
Renee returned to the source of art
making practice for this exhibit. The curious, adventurous, anything goes making from her youth created these many delightful, often curious
objects. This making process was fun and immediate, creating new pieces rapidly and severing what had become an emotional tie to the promises of
all these materials.
To further sever the tie, the work is for sale, and very affordable prices range from $1 to $50. Some work is
available for cash and carry.
