Traveler of the Month
Stephanie Smalls, RN

My name is Stephanie N. Smalls and I'm originally from Georgetown, South Carolina.  I have been an RN since March 2003. My specialty is Pediatrics.

I have been traveling with TNAA since March 2005 with assignments to Fontana, California (13 wks) and most recently Bethesda, Maryland. I started traveling to see nursing practice in other parts of the country. I also wanted a chance to see parts of the world that I probably would not have otherwise had the chance to see!

When asked to describe a memorable experience while traveling, one particular patient immediately comes to mind.  Continue reading...

Tips For Travelers
Elements of Litigation: Negligence

by David W. Woodruff, MSN, RN, CNS, CCRN
President, Ed4Nurses, Inc.

Negligence occurs when a nurse fails to follow the “standard of care.” Although nurses often use this term to describe their normal practice, this term has a very specific legal meaning.

The legal definition of “standard of care” is the basic level of care that is required of a reasonable and prudent nurse in similar situations. It is not the highest level of care, and it is not a regional or hospital specific standard.

The standard of care is a national standard. Therefore, your care will be compared to that of other nurses nationally. In other words, it is not OK to say “that’s the way we’ve always done it.” If national standards and guidelines exist, your care will be compared to them. So, even following your hospital policies and procedures will not avoid negligence, because they may be deemed as below the national standard of care as well.

The best way to maintain a practice that meets the standard of care is to keep up to date using national resources and to become involved in hospital policy reviews to assure that you are practicing at a level that meets current standards.

Ask the Recruiter
Meaghan Morrow
Recruiting Specialist

Question:  Hi Meaghan!  I'm new at this whole travel nurse business, and I'm kind of nervous about interviewing with the hospital.  I can guess what they'll want to ask me, but can you give me some guidance about intelligent-sounding questions I might ask the hospital?

Answer: What a great question!  You're already way ahead of the game if you realize that you are interviewing the hospital, as well as vice-versa!  In order to ensure success for both you and the hospital, it's important that your placement is a good fit, so your goal should be to have all of your questions answered when you hang up the phone.  To make it easy for our nurses, we've put together a Hospital Interview Checklist that contains specific questions regarding Orientation, Shift Specifics, Float Policies, Uniform Requirements, etc.  I'd be happy to email you a copy -- it's a great resource, especially when you're just starting out!

Housing Highlight
Sheffield Court
Arlington, Virginia

There is no mystery why Sheffield Court has quickly become one of our nurses' favorite places to call home!  Where else can you bring your cat, wash your car, attend complimentary cocktail parties, work out in a Cardio Theater, be entertained in a state-of-the-art Media Room, and easily jump on the Metrorail?

Considered the center of the Washington, DC metropolitan area, if you've always wanted to live in our nation's capital, Arlington is the place to be!  Although it is perhaps best known as the home of the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington's population is among the most highly educated in the nation, so as a travel nurse, you'll fit right in, Gwen!

We have several fantastic job opportunities in the DC area -- contact a Recruiter and reserve your spot on the Metro!

Go With the Flo!

Our little TNAA mascot, Flat Flo, has dedicated the last few weeks to "Me Time," getting pampered and spoiled by our TNAA staff.  Although we enjoy her company, we have gently let her know that it's time to get back to work!

How about you, Gwen?  Are you game?  We'll send you Flo, a disposable camera, and a postage paid return mailer, so all you'll have to do is take Flo and Go!  If you're currently on assignment with Travel Nurse across America, and would like to be placed on the Go With the Flo! reservation list, send an email to news@nurse.tv, and tell us where you and Flo will go!
