MONADNOCK DURAPRINT

Monadnock Has Durable Packaging Covered—
with New Duraprint

Monadnock Paper Mills introduces a new line of turned-edge covering materials for the packaging and publishing industries.

Engineered for strength, flexibility, printability and post-press processing, the Duraprint line provides flexibility without cracking, making it ideal for applications where repetitive or aggressive folding is a requirement. Intended uses for the new line include book covers, DVD/CD collector set cases, keepsake jewelry and cosmetics boxes, software cases, durable point-of-sale signage or any application where packaging is used to store or display products long after purchase.

Duraprint is available in two grades, Duraprint 7, a 6-point caliper cover stock material and Duraprint T2, a heavy-duty 10-point caliper weight that meets NASTA Type II textbook specifications.

“Monadnock has participated in this market for many years on a made-to-order basis,” said Dave Lunati, Monadnock’s Director of Marketing. “Given the market demand for durable/flexible cover stocks with long-term durability characteristics, it just made sense to make them part of our core offering.”

Duraprint materials are super-smooth, white stocks available in sheets or rolls. These grades print using standard offset printing and convert, emboss, foil stamp and laminate beautifully.

Like all Monadnock printing and packaging papers, Duraprint is manufactured carbon neutral using 100% renewable electricity. Monadnock has a long record of environmental stewardship. Duraprint is no exception. It is made under the strict guidelines of an ISO 14001:2004 certified environmental management system.

A Field Guide

A Field guide: Eco-Friendly, efficient and effective print

Monadnock Releases Third Edition of Its Acclaimed
Sustainable Design Guide

Monadnock Paper Mills released the third edition of its renowned instructional how-to guide for creating more sustainable print materials. The publication, A Field Guide: Eco-Friendly, Efficient and Effective Print is a one-stop-shop resource that objectively details alternative design decisions that impact sustainability without sacrificing style or function.

The guide is printed on Monadnock’s Astrolite PC100®, an uncoated 100% post-consumer fiber, process chlorine-free, archival-quality paper. Like all Monadnock Printing and Packaging Papers, Astrolite PC100  is made with 100% renewable electricity and is manufactured carbon neutral.

“We’re very pleased that our Field Guide has become a leading industry resource for furthering sustainable decision-making in the graphics field” said Richard Verney, Chairman and CEO of Monadnock Paper Mills. “The Third Edition continues Monadnock’s commitment to provide graphics’ professionals with the tools and knowledge to impact sustainability throughout the design and production processes.” The guide doesn’t tell designers what to do, nor does it advocate that they follow every suggestion. Rather, it provides detailed information on decisions that impact sustainability in the design processes and offers environmentally preferable choices that can be made at each stage of the process.

Designed for Monadnock by Signaltree Marketing & Advertising, A Field Guide is inspired by nature field guides, and features the whimsical nature illustrations of the late Charley Harper. The guide presents information from choosing paper to binding the finished piece including, paper types, paper contents and chemical labeling, sizing to reduce paper waste, inks and coatings, finishing techniques, binding, printing processes and the use of environmental logos. New information in the third edition of A Field Guide includes a full chapter dedicated to eco marketing, eco claims and the topic of  “greenwashing,” as well as new information on inks and finishing.

“Throughout its history, Monadnock has taken its role as a steward of the environment seriously” says Verney. “The third edition of A Field Guide continues that tradition.”

The guide is available as a downloadable PDF—see below. Printed copies may be ordered here at www.mpm.com/info.

Monadnock Earns Top Honors Among
Socially Responsible Businesses

The New Hampshire Businesses for Social Responsibility (NHBSR) 2008 Cornerstone Award was presented to Monadnock Paper Mills, Inc., at NHBSR’s annual conference held in Bedford, New Hampshire. Richard Verney, Chairman and CEO of Monadnock Paper Mills, accepted the award from former New Hampshire governor, Jeanne Shaheen, on behalf of Monadnock.

Monadnock was selected as this year’s recipient from several finalists based on its ongoing achievements in conservation and environmental stewardship. Finalists for the cornerstone award included Tele Atlas, Climate Counts, The Smuttynose Brewing Company and Regency Mortgage.

"Being nominated as one of the five finalists for the prestigious Cornerstone Award is an honor that all Monadnock employees can be proud of," said Verney. "Corporate social responsibility is the result of efforts by all employees at Monadnock. It is our collective objective to improve our environmental position each year."

In 2006, Monadnock generated 49% of its energy needs through its own low-impact hydro-electric generation facilities and was one of the first paper mills to receive Forest Stewardship Council chain-of-custody certification for its Astrolite PC100 100% post-consumer recycled line of printing papers. In 2006, Monadnock became an ISO 14001:2004 certified company for the establishment of its comprehensive Environmental Management System.

In the past two years alone, Monadnock has been able to reduce operating expenses by $500,000 through its green efforts. “One thing I can’t stress enough” said Verney in accepting the award, “is that conservation is part of being a good corporate citizen and is not only the responsible thing to do, it also can save your company money.” For more information about Monadnock Paper Mills and its environmental efforts visit www.mpm.com.

Monadnock and Curtis Join Forces
at Luxe Pack New York

Monadnock Paper Mills and Curtis Packaging joined forces at Luxe Pack New York to launch a new packaging product and lead a discussion on eco-design. The Set-up Box Replacement (SBR™) box manufactured by Curtis and made with Envi by Monadnock® PC80 Folding Box Board was debuted to luxury packaging buyers at the event and received rave reviews. The new box concept combines strength, sharp edges and crisp lines and eliminates the need for set-up boxes. Because it is made with Envi by Monadnock, it is also FSC certified, contains 80% post-consumer recycled content and is manufactured carbon neutral using 100% renewable electricity. The SBR box wasn’t the only connection between the two companies at the event. Both Monadnock and Curtis participated in a panel discussion on environmental design. David Lunati, Director of Marketing from Monadnock, and Don Droppo, Jr., President of Curtis, spoke about eco-noise and how designers and brand owners can separate the facts from the hype regarding environmental certifications and logos. The panel was moderated by Karen Newman, Group Editor in Chief, Global Cosmetic Industry Magazine and was attended by more than 100 packaging buyers, specifiers and designers.

Monadnock Turns HOW into WOW
for Boston Designer

When designer Mario Franic of Roycroft Design signed up to attend the HOW design show, he did it with the intent of driving his design career. Little did he know that by the end of the show he would leave driving something else—a new Vespa motor scooter courtesy of Monadnock Paper Mills. Franic was one of over 3500 designers from all over the world that attended the conference and entered to win the scooter at Monadnock’s booth at the annual graphic design trade show. The bright red Vespa Granturismo 200 was displayed in the Monadnock booth throughout the show and was raffled off in front of an estimated 1000 designers on the last day of the trade show. “When we were thinking of ideas for getting our booth noticed at a crowded trade show, the Vespa giveaway really made sense for Monadnock” said Kathleen Byrnes, Monadnock Boston sales rep. “After all, both Monadnock and Vespa are elegant brands that are also both eco-friendly.” Franic held the winning ticket and was awarded the new scooter on the spot. Ironically, Franic, who has driven a scooter to his design job in Boston for several years, indicated his old scooter was on its last legs. Enjoy your new scooter, Mario!
