Memories from the Past

Alumnus, Jonathan Beaty, graduated in 2006 with a Business Degree in Accounting. He attended GCU four years and created many great memories and close friends. He played on the men’s golf team
during his time at GCU and some of his favorite memories include his teammates and traveling to different cities and playing at a variety of golf
courses. Jon lived in Bright Angel dorm his freshman year and loved it. Whether it was water balloon fights in the halls or playing pranks on one
another, they were always finding something to stay entertained.
He met his wife Jenny Galon through a golf teammate at GCU. Their first kiss happened on the GCU
campus. They were married on May 5, 2007 at the Tucson Country Club. He is currently a Personal Markets Insurance Agent with Liberty Mutual. He has
partnered with GCU Alumni Relations to offer special discounts on auto and home insurance to all alumni.
These are the wonderful memories that Alumni students will take with them for the duration of
their life. We would love to hear other GCU memories. If you have a story you would like to share, please write to mbeem@gcu.edu.

Antelope Athletics Senior Tennis Player Earns National Kudos
Sheila Johnson has brought a new face to GCU tennis. While the 60-year old Johnson
is close to 40 years the senior of many of her teammates the Antelopes senior is making her opponents look old and tired with a 7-4 record in singles
and 6-4 mark this season. The Peoria retiree played three years of college tennis at Arizona State University from 1963-65 before concentrating on
her career as a math teacher, and to raising a family. Upon retiring, Johnson took up the game again, taking lessons from Greg Prudhomme, the pro
at Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale. When Prudhomme was hired to coach GCU’s women’s tennis team prior to the season he figured
his days of instructing Johnson were over. But what started as a joke, with Johnson suggesting she’d have to play at GCU to keep getting
lessons, quickly turned into reality. The new coach inherited a GCU team without any returning players or much time to recruit a new roster. The
thought of bringing in Johnson, who still had one year of eligibility remaining, quickly grew in appeal. By signing up for 12 credit hours at GCU
Johnson was eligible to play. Through the season’s first couple months she’s 7-4 in singles play and 6-4 in doubles. Her efforts
have caught the attention of a number of national online publications such as tennisweekly.com and si.com, both of which have done pieces featuring
the oldest know current college athlete in the NCAA ranks. Locally she has been featured in the Arizona Republic, the Daily News-Sun and the
Glendale/Peoria Today while also being profiled on local TV station KPNX (Ch. 12).
