	Happy 4th of July Congress passed a law making Independence Day a federal holiday on June 28, 1870. It wasn’t until after the War of 1812 that observing this day became commonplace. Americans celebrate with picnics, fireworks, parades and family gatherings. Amid all the fun, let’s not lose sight of the significance of the day, particularly where it notes, "…all people are created equal,” and the guarantee of “…certain unalienable rights…life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Now, that’s something to celebrate!

	Studio Projects Win Awards The 2007 holiday card designed for Carlsbad’s Gemological Institute of America was chosen for an Award of Excellence by GMUND Paper Company. It featured a five-level, sculpted emboss. Also, a greeting card for IP law firm Knobbe Martens was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Print Industry Association, for the Studio’s unique use of silver foil and intricate die-cutting. Monica Moon and Nicholas Ivins were the projects’ designers.

	The Studio Chef’s Famous 4th of July Potato Salad Recipe Just the thing to serve at your picnic. Prepare the salad the night before and refrigerate, as the ingredients will meld together, making it even tastier. 6 large baking potatoes 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar 1-1⁄2 teaspoons celery salt 1⁄2 cup each diced onion and celery 6 hard-cooked eggs (optional) 1⁄2 cup mayonnaise 1⁄2 cup sour cream 2 teaspoons prepared mustard 1 tablespoon catsup 1-1⁄2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1-1⁄2 teaspoons paprika salt and pepper to taste 1⁄4 cup chopped parsley Boil potatoes in their skins until they pierce easily with a fork. Drain. While potatoes are still hot, and handling them with several layers of paper towels, remove peels and quarter. Season potatoes with oil and vinegar and celery salt. Let them chill in the refrigerator, tossing several times to coat the potatoes. Dice the potatoes, add the rest of the ingredients, again tossing well. Sprinkle top of salad with paprika and chopped parsley. Keep the potato salad chilled until you’re ready to serve.

	Del Mar Fair June 14-July 4 A grand county fair (now called the San Diego County Fair) at the Del Mar Fairgrounds with all sorts of entertainments. The woodworking show, flower show, hobby show and gems and mineral exhibits are worth taking in, and they’re free, as are the animal exhibits (nothing beats marveling at the large dairy cows, the variety of rabbit breeds and the near-overpowering odor of the animal barns). 	Things to Do. Now. Turn off the TV. Pick up a book and read. Walk around your neighborhood block. At least twice. Say hello to neighbors, even if you don’t know them. If you are close to places where you would usually drive, walk to them. It saves you gas money and does your body good. Summer means crowded freeways and beaches. Think of alternatives to joining the pack. Not to get Zen on you—but seek an alternate path. There are enjoyments to be found without the aggravation of traffic and finding no place to park. Try the trolley or Amtrak. Or even (gasp!) the bus. Cast off your old tired ethics and pry yourself out of your car for a moment. Go to Balboa Park and walk among the eucalyptus trees and savor the intimacy of nature. Take a picnic lunch along. Stroll down the Prado and gaze at the tourists. Sit in a quiet corner and relax. Enjoy the summer.
	Tip o’ the Quarter Cockroach Control Are cockroaches in your home driving you mad? Try this: fill a large bowl with cheap wine and leave it under the sink. The pests will drink it, get drunk, fall in the bowl and drown. The roaches that don’t fall in and drown will wake up with tremendous hangovers and check into rehab and never be heard from again.
