The 2008 Law Enforcement Torch Run Kick-Off and Awards Luncheon was held on January 31, 2008.
Despite the snowy weather, more than 20 agencies were represented at this year's event. Every year at the annual event, the Tim Stafford
"Unsung Hero" Award, in memory of the late Trooper Tim Stafford, to an outstanding individual who has contributed to the Torch Run in spirit and
dedication in an effective and unheralded fashion. This year, the award was presented to Inspector Don Hull with the Oklahoma City Police Department.
In addition to agency awards, highlights and successes shared from the 2007 International Law
Enforcement Torch Run Conference and a fantastic barbeque provided by our friends at Head Country, wonderful words of encouragement were
expressed by special guest speaker Lt. Gov. Jari Askins. An avocate for Special Olympics Oklahoma, Lt. Gov. Askins spoke highly of Oklahoma's
Law Enforcement Torch Run volunteers and the difference they have made in the life's of each athlete involved.
Oklahoma's Law Enforcement Torch Run was successful in raising more than $225,000 in 2007. With a great
kick-off to a new year and continued support from dedicated agencies and new involvement, we are sure to reach our goal of becoming a quarter-million

THE TORCH RUN
Each year, hundreds of Oklahoma law enforcment employees organize and participate in the Torch
Run for Special Olympics. The Torch Run is a series of relay runs leading up to the Special Olympics Oklahoma State Summer Games.
The culmination of the run is at the Summer Games Opening Ceremonies, where the torch bearers bring the "Flame of Hope" into the ceremonies
to light the Summer Games Cauldron.
Oklahoma's annual Torch Run is not only a symbolic relay, it is also a fundraising
oppourtunity for Special Olympics Oklahoma. Runners are encouraged to collect pledges from family and friends for their participation
in the event. We are asking that all Law Enforcement Torch Run agencies make plans to participate in the run this year. Please start
encouraging your fellow officers now! This is one of the most visible events for our Torch Run and we want to show our communities what
our organization is all about.
