This issue of In Brief is filled with good news. We welcomed five new faculty members as well as our first class of students into our Law and Economics program this fall, expanded our LL.M. program for foreign attorneys to include a course-track master’s program as well as our traditional thesis-track program and welcomed an accomplished 1L class. And books by Jim Ely, Richard Nagareda, and Don Welch were released.

Richard Nagareda's groundbreaking book, Mass Torts in a World of Settlement, was released by the University of Chicago Press in September, followed by the third edition of Jim Ely's definitive work on property rights in the United States, The Guardian of Every Other Right: A Constitutional History of Property Rights, which was released by Oxford University Press in November, and by Don Welch's Vanderbilt Law School: Aspirations and Realities, released by Vanderbilt University Press in December. Dean Welch's book is the first book-length history of Vanderbilt Law School. Professor Nagareda proposes an innovative solution to mass tort litigation. Professor Ely's book has been updated to include important recent developments, including Kelo v. the City of New London. Click on the covers above to read the full stories.

Bob Covington retires after 46-year tenure on Vanderbilt's law faculty
Professor Covington joined the faculty in 1961, immediately after his graduation from Vanderbilt Law School. At that time, Dean John Wade customarily hired a top graduate to teach and serve as a research fellow the following year. Professor Covington agreed to put his plans to join the JAG Corps on hold for a year to accept the honor.
