Lakshmi
is 13 when her step-father sells her to pay off his gambling debts. She ends up
working as a prostitute in a brothel in India. There she is beaten, starved and
exposed to a variety of diseases. While horrifying and sad, this book is
beautifully written. Lakshmi's voice is amazingly clear and raw. This is a surprisingly engrossing read for anyone
interested in children's rights or human trafficking.

Kate
Malone is 18 and has her whole life planned out. She will graduate high school
with superior grades, go to MIT and study Chemistry. Her plans fall apart when
she is forced to live with a school rival, and she receives her letter from
MIT. This is the story of how "good Kate" and "bad Kate" deal with these
catalysts and make the best of the situation.
So Yesterday by Scott Westerfeld JH
Westerfeld
Hunter
is 17 and works for an unnamed company conducting "cool studies." His job is to
find the hot new trends and report them to the company so that they can
successfully market their products. One day his coworker mysteriously
disappears and he finds out more about the company than he ever imagined. Don't
expect regular Scott Westerfeld content here.
This book is part mystery, part romance, and part satire of modern
marketing techniques. It's a fascinating
read.
