July......................................
There is nothing like the right summer
read. Whether it quenches a light thirst like fresh watermelon or broadens the mind like the perfect sunset. We aim to help you connect
to
the reads of your choice. Buy your reads at the Book Sale, swing through the paperback display for a good beach read, scan articles online for
current tips on exercise and cooking, grab a musical on CD or a non-fiction film. Whatever it may be, consider the Library your first stop for
summer entertainment. - Angela Mollet

Magician to Perform
Scott Jameson will perform a free magic show as
the kick-off to the Gleason Library Summer Reading Program on Monday,
June 23 at 7 p.m. at the First Religious Society. "Magic by Scott
Jameson" is not a magic show in the typical "pull the rabbit out of a
hat" sense. Scott's show artfully combine magic and juggling with clever
characterizations, physical skill, music, mime storytelling and plenty of
audience participation. This program is suitable for children in grades K and
up. The Friends of the Gleason library are providing the funding for this
performance. For more information call the library at 1-978-369-4898.
Children's
display case
Please stop by the
children's room and check out the featured display in our display case. Our
first fabulous exhibitors were:
˜Owen
Schmidt and his
stunning dragon collection
˜Zachary
Clark and his
extensive Pokémon collection
˜Hugh
Schmidt and his
impressive Lego creations
For
more information, contact Nancy Boutet, Children's Librarian, at nboutet@mvlc.org
or call 1-978-369-4898. This display case was made available through funds
provided by the Friends of the Gleason Public Library.
Puppet Theater
Thanks to the Friends of the
Gleason Public Library, we now own a fun puppet theater and puppets, which is
available for all of our Children's Room patrons to use when they visit.
For Gleason's Teens
Teens of Gleason Advisors
The
next TOGA meeting will be Wednesday, July 2, from 3 to 4 p.m.
TOGA (Teens of Gleason Advisors), Gleason's teen advisory group, gives a voice
in the library to Carlisle's fifth- to eighth-graders. Currently comprised of
about 15 students and overseen by Erica St. Peter, Gleason's teen librarian,
TOGA meets at least once a month to brainstorm and assist in making decisions
that will directly impact teens in the library. For more information about TOGA
or the meeting, please write Erica: estpeter@mvlc.org.
TOGAzine
The
teens of Carlisle Middle School deserve a public forum to show off their
talents to the town and see what their peers are capable of. There are surely
plenty of students at the Middle School who keep journals of poetry or
sketches, but they may need a bit of encouragement to come out and contribute
them. The Teens of Gleason have joined with the Library to form TOGAzine, an
online magazine that will be entirely made up of students' artwork and literary
pieces. Please give us a hand in prompting students to share their work! If you
have any questions, contact Erica St. Peter at estpeter@mvlc.org.

Summer
Reading: Wild Reads
Wild Reads at Your Library
summer reading program runs from June 23 through July 31.
Summer Reading is open to all participants. Teens (grades seven and up) and
Adults can log their reading online. Just go to the library website at www.gleasonlibrary.org or drop by the Library to sign up. Last year
Carlisle readers logged 142,885 pages. How many pages in 2008? Challenge your friends, family members,
and colleagues to read.
For the kids: All
children entering grades one through six are enthusiastically encouraged to
participate. The library will provide a Wild Reads reading log for tracking the
books and the number of pages read. We will also host-themed craft events for
grades one to two, three to four, and five to six as well as a kickoff
introductory party and a final celebration with games and reading awards for
each group.
In keeping with this year's theme of Wild
Reads at Your Library, the library will host three special events: a
unique magical performance by magician and juggler Scott Jameson, up close
contact with the Rainforest Reptiles, and a Mountain Mushers presentation that
includes real sled dogs.
For teens
(seventh grade and up) and adults,
all you need to do in order to participate is sign up in person at the library
or online at www.gleasonlibrary.org.
Then, simply, track your reading with pages or minutes read. At the conclusion
of the program, we will announce top readers, random readers, and share a few
other morsels of reading news. Join us and enjoy the pleasures of summer
reading.
For a complete calendar of children's, teen, and
adult programs or to register online, visit www.gleasonlibrary.org.
New Copier on the
Way
A HUGE thank you to the Friends
of the Gleason Public Library for their purchase of a new photocopier for the
Gleason Public Library. We expect to install the new machine in July, to much
applause from library staff and visitors alike. To time it right, the
price of printing and copying will also rise to 15 cents per page starting July
1.
Felix the Cat
In May 2008, the Gleason Public Library trustees
announced that the cat sculpture on the west entrance of the Library will
henceforward be named "Felix" in honor of the years of service given
by Felix (Phil) Conti, former Library Trustee. Please join us in congratulating
Phil on his many years of work on behalf of the Gleason Public Library!
BRIC: Brick Restoration Implementation Committee
The Library Building Committee is hard at work
drafting a request for proposals seeking a consultant to assess the
deterioration of the historic structure of the building. Curious? You can see
the damage on the inside of the building on the second floor behind the
children's desk between the windows. The wood is damaged and the wall has
bubbled. On the third floor, the same bubbling has occurred. Our thanks to the
committee members: Elizabeth Barnett, Neal Emmer, Bob Hilton, Ken Hoffman,
Albert Innamorati, Bob Koning, Angela Mollet, Ann Rosas, Dale Ryder, Priscilla
Stevens, and Sally Swift.
Thank you for making the most of your Library!
