Know your body
Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer in the UK, yet 90 per
cent
of adults don't know what the gland does, according to The Prostate Cancer Charity. Found at the base of the bladder, the prostate produces a fluid
that makes up about a third of semen. Thankfully, you can help protect yourself from prostate cancer. A study in journal Cancer Research revealed
that when tomatoes and broccoli are eaten together, they are more effective at shrinking the tumours than when eaten separately. And a further study,
in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, found that broccoli, cauliflower and spinach contain anti-cancer compounds. Spread the
word!

GREEN IS THE NEW BLACK
Further confirmation of the positive properties of green tea comes from new research conducted at the
University of Geneva. Thanks, it's thought, to the presence of polyphenols, green tea really does increase metabolism and therefore speeds up the
rate of fat oxidation. If you want to experience these benefit for yourself, but don't like the taste, you could try taking green tea extract in
capsule form.

Juicy Benefits
Researchers from the University of Glasgow recently sought to discover which fruit juice is richest
in antioxidants - those micro
mops that do their darnedest to get rid of cell-destroying free radicals. It seems that purple grape juice comes top, followed by cloudy apple,
cranberry, grapefruit and tropical blend. how's that for a juicy bit of
information!

F For Fibre
Readers of a certain age may remember Audrey Eyton's The Complete F-Plan Diet,
the 'F' standing for fibre (though some wiseacres said it was short for a rather ruder word, what with the excess wind that was often produced by
adherents). Fibrous food has had plenty of good press since those days - it tends to have a low medium glycaemic index rating and is instrumental in
detoxing the intestines, Now, the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise metabolism has published a report concluding that
breakfasting on high-fibre cereals and fruit enables better endurance performance than when you opt
for the white options. Eight runners were given fibrous cereal and fruit, whilst another eight broke their fast with cornflakes, white toast and jam.
The fibre folk managed to run for a full seven minutes longer than the others before exhaustion kicked in. So, to help improve your endurance opt for
a high-fibre cereal sprinkled with dried fruit.
