1. Homecoming a Huge Success

October 13th turned out to be a beautiful sunny day in Southern Maryland.  What a great day to spend with fellow alums and their families on the SMCM campus. Many former athletes played in the alumni games (a few injuries -- ouch!), while others watched the Varsity sports or the cardboard boat race, ate yummy Bar-B-Q and drank plenty of beer and wine in the Alumni tent. Check out how the Varsity teams are finishing their seasons on the Athletics homepage.

2. Seahawk Basketball Exhibition set for Verizon Center

The St. Mary’s College men’s basketball team will play a special exhibition basketball game – Friday, November 9th at 3 p.m. at the Verizon Center in downtown D.C. against Division II Bowie State University. Tickets are $35 and are on sale now. To purchase your ticket, call (240) 895-4318 by Tuesday, November 6th. What makes this game so special is that your ticket will also allow you to stay to see the Washington Wizards against Allen Iverson, Carmelo Anthony and the Denver Nuggets at 8 p.m. Come out to support your Seahawks – Friday, November 9th at the Verizon Center.

3. Business-to-Business

We are proud of our graduate entrepreneurs and are offering FREE advertising to business owners on the SMCM Alumni Web site. Alums who own their own business are able to post their business information online for other SMCM alums, current students, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and visitors to the Web site to view. To sign up, fill out the business-to-business form.  The site will be completely operational soon.  We are still gathering information to post.

4. Microbrewery: a Draw for Alums

The DC Chapter had a huge turnout for the Gordon Biersch Networking Event last month.  Sixty alumni – from Baltimore to Annapolis and Northern Virginia—and spanning from 1961 to 2007 enjoyed renewing old connections and making new ones. Three grads from the 1970s were acknowledged for having children currently enrolled at St. Mary’s, and there was one family that had a rep from two generations present.  Special thanks to Michelle Paris ’85, events coordinator for the chapter and to Susan Kary Ford ’74 for getting her St. Mary’s e-mail network crowd to turn out.

5. More Great Traditions with Alum Friends

It’s one thing to have a tradition; it’s another to keep a record of it on the Web. We encourage you to check out the 23-year saga (complete with journal entries and photos) of fun times and hilarity that Bob Tracy ’86 has masterfully displayed on http://www.chiliweekend.com/. Trust us; you don’t have to know these guys to enjoy reading about what takes place at the Rudy cabin each winter.  If you don’t have a tradition it’ll make you want to start one. Participants in the chili weekend include Craig Rudy '86, Craig Loundas '87, Sean Kolb '86, John Webster '88, Joe Inglisa '87, Doug Wantling '87, Bob Tracy '86, Fred Becker '86 and Pete Wiley '86Let us know about your SMCM-friends tradition at alumnioffice@smcm.edu

6. Vela was more than a Team Mascot

Varsity Sailing Team spiritual adviser and unofficial team mascot, Vela welcomed all to the SMCM waterfront for the better part of 14 1/2 years. As the emotional leader of the St. Mary's College sailing team, Vela could turn a day of doldrums into an Ultimate Frisbee blowout. Vela, which means "sail" in Spanish, never missed a practice or a home regatta. She will be missed by all. http://athletics.smcm.edu/sailing/staff.cfm

7. Travel Tour to London

There’s still time to reserve your spot on the College’s tour to London in January 2008. This week-long trip is led by David Groupé of the Theater, Film, and Media Studies Department. It includes five London plays, sightseeing, and tours. Click on the Brochure for complete details.
