BFF – SMCM Traditions
Who knew that when we met on first left, Queen Anne, more than 26 years ago that
we’d become best friends forever. We have made our friendship a priority and have supported each other through
life’s celebrations and challenges. Our annual girlfriend weekend in New York has been a tradition for several years
now. The weekend before Thanksgiving we take on the Big Apple and Broadway where we see the latest show and shop for the best
bargains. The need for sun has added a trip to our calendar – we now have an annual girlfriend getaway to Key
West! We’d like to say more, but what happens in New York and Key West, stays in New York and Key West.

by May, and we anticipate the new directory will be mailed this summer. We thank you for your response to their inquiry –
it helps to keep our alumni database up to date. We also appreciate your patience with the process.

the Alumni Directory with your current information, please give them a call at 1-866-623-4748.
Seahawks Ranked No. 24 in Final Division III
Poll
To cap off an incredible season, the SMCM men’s basketball team received the
program’s first-ever national ranking as the Seahawks finished No. 24 in the final Division III Top 25 released by D3hoops.com.
St. Mary’s ranking is a testament to the Seahawks’ success during the 2007-08
campaign. For the first time in program history, SMCM made an appearance in the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Tournament by
clinching the Capital Athletic Conference championship, which gave them an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. This was the school’s second
CAC Championship title. On March 1, 4th seed SMCM triumphed over 2nd seed Mary Washington in an 82-72 win at M.W.
The Seahawks took full advantage of their NCAA appearance, surviving the first two rounds
of the NCAA tourney to advance to the “Sweet 16.” St. Mary’s, which was not expected to get past the first round, notched
upset victories over then eighth-ranked Guilford College (89-77 at Guilford) and Widener University (83-74 at Guilford) in the first and second
rounds, respectively. Guilford had been predicted to claim the NCAA national championship.
SMCM continued its quest for the NCAA title at Washington University in St. Louis, which
served as one of four sectional hosts for the “Sweet 16.” The Seahawks suffered a tough 82-73 setback at the hands of then
14th-ranked Millsaps College.
With their 19-12 final overall record in 2007-08, the Seahawks set the school record for
the most wins in a season since St. Mary’s became affiliated with NCAA Division III in the early 80s. As an NAIA member, the Seahawks
tallied 25 wins under former mentor, Ed Cole.
