Molly and Tyson: A mother and her kitten find their forever home together

by Maureen Cadden

One Monday evening during Open House, a tow truck driver showed up at DAWS.  He had just finished a call at Danbury High School.  He was about to leave the school and saw a bag of garbage on the side of the road.  He picked it up and it moved.  Upon opening it up, he found a mother cat and a kitten that had been tied inside.  He didn't know what to do so he brought them to DAWS.

We took them in and named them Ashley and James.  The kitten, James, was only about 3 weeks old.  He and his mom seemed to have a very special bond.  We initially had concerned that James might have suffered from a lack of oxygen having been tied up in the bag.  After being checked out by a vet, he was deemed healthy.  We initially wanted to have them adopted together as we couldn't bear to separate them after all they had been through.  As luck would have it, a woman came in looking for a pair.  After hearing about and meeting Ashley and James, she wasn't going to let them go.  So, she adopted both, gave them new names: Molly and Tyson, and they now are living happily ever after.

Sato Ramon:  A city boy who loves his weekends in the country

by Wendy Yuhasz

Sato Ramon was adopted back in March. This little guy had a string of unfavorable applications until he struck gold. He went home with a young couple that works in NYC during the week and has a weekend home in Redding.

Ramon is a city boy Monday through Friday and loves his walks down the busy streets. They said he could smell food from a mile away. This can probably be attributed to his street life in Puerto Rico!!

On the weekend he is a country boy and enjoys hiking and jogging. Ramon is a small Chihuahua mix, but they said he has the energy of a lab and always wants to walk more. He goes everywhere with his mom and dad and is only left alone about 3 hours per week.

What a lucky guy!

John Mellencamp Summer Tour – Unused tickets benefit DAWS

Kathleen Palmer had big plans for the summer - including a trip to Los Angeles’ famed Greek Theater to see John Mellencamp.  But when her plans changed she didn't hesitate to put her tickets to good use - for DAWS.  You see, Kathleen donated her tickets to us and we sold them through our eBay store, raising $190.

Kathleen is pictured here with her dog, Koa.

To Kathleen Palmer, Applause from DAWS!!

Celebrating a 10th Birthday by helping animals in need

by Jenny Bocchino

At DAWS, we have a network of foster families who help us out by providing a temporary home for animals who need a little more help than we can provide in our shelter (like kittens, puppies, and special needs adults).

One of these families has a very special daughter named Elisa who wanted to include DAWS in the celebration of her 10th birthday.

She and four friends collected food and also spent the afternoon making beds and toys for the cats.  Then, on a Saturday afternoon, volunteer Jenny Bocchino hosted them for a visit.  After a tour of the shelter, the girls gave out their beds and toys.

Elisa's mom then gave us a very generous $100 sponsorship for one of the cats in honor of Elisa's birthday.

Happy 10th Birthday, Elisa!  To you, your friends, and your family, Applause from DAWS!!

Enjoy the month of August - you'll hear from us again in early September!
