National Coming Out Day

"Through the Ages" Panel, 7-9PM, Equality Center
Oklahomans for Equality celebrates National Coming Out Day and LGBT History Month with "Hear Our Stories: Coming Out Through the Ages". Friends of OkEq tell their stories of coming out through several generation -- some will break your heart, some will make you laugh, all will reveal the journey of coming out in Oklahoma.

Out and Proud Bar Crawl
Several area gay bars will celebrate Coming Out Day with karaoke, drag shows, and drink specials. Be sure and ask for the National Coming Out Day drink special. Participating bars include:

Matthew's Place Launch
Friday, October 12, 7-8:30pm, Equality Center
On the 9th anniversary of his tragic death, the Matthew Shepard Foundation will launch an historic web-resource for LGBT youth. Through an online video stream, Judy Shepard will introduce you to Matthewsplace.com and discuss the realities facing disenfranchised and homeless LGBT Youth in America. Following the stream, Julie Trainum of Youth Services of Tulsa will lead a discussion on issues facing LGBT youth

OK State Rep Al McAffrey: "A Living History"
Tuesday, October 16, 7pm, Equality Center
Recently recognized in The Advocate's 40th anniversary issue in "Great American Lives: The Trailblazers", Representative McAffrey will discuss campaigning as an openly gay candidate and his career in public office.

Brookside BooHaHa parade and Pumpkin Decorating Contest
Pumpkin Contest, throughout October, Equality Center
Bring your decorated pumpkins (external decorations only, no carvings or flames) to display throughout the Equality Center during October. We'll feature them at out BooHaHa booth and award first, second and third place winners. Entry fee is $5 and deadline for participation is October 19. Entries should be in good taste, child friendly and appropriate for public display.

 

Parade, Saturday, October 27, 3pm, 49th and Peoria

Oklahomans for Equality will celebrate a collaboration with Families First, an LGBT parents network, by participating in the annual Brookside BooHaHa parade -- the first time OkEq has been invited to participate in a kid-friendly event. Our float theme is "There is No Trick to Showing Respect to All Oklahoma Families -- It Is Always a Treat!" To help with the float, visit the Equality Center every Saturday at 3pm. To participate in the parade, or learn more about Families First,  contact Outreach Coordinator Toby Jenkins.

OkEq at TCC Diversity Day
Tuesday, October 22, TCC South Campus
Tulsa Community College has invited Oklahomans for Equality to participate in their Diversity Day fair. If you are interested in helping OkEq, contact Programs and Development Coordinator Mana Tahaie at (918) 743-4297. If you attend TCC, stop by and visit our booth on the 22nd!

 

Camp Fire Teens in Action introduction party
Thursday, October 25, 7pm, Equality Center
Oklahomans for Equality is partnering with Camp Fire USA Green Country Council for a new Teens in Action service learning group. This group -- created to empower young people to identify and address social issues in their community --  is open to all high school-age teens, but especially designed for LGBT teens, youth from LGBT families, and their friends and allies. We offer a safe and inclusive environment, allowing teens to play an instrumental role in choosing and addressing issues that are important to them. For more information, come to the introduction party, where the facilitators will talk about the program and answer questions. Refreshments will be provided!
