Eyewitness to Global Warming:
Conversation with Polar Explorer Will
Steger
Renowned polar explorer Will Steger will bring his powerful firsthand
account of the effects of global warming to Kansas audiences February
11th and 12th.
Steger,
the Midwest's own eyewitness to global warming, is best known for
leading legendary polar explorations over the past 40 years. Through
the course of these expeditions, Steger has seen the effects of global
warming on the Arctic firsthand, and has become a formidable voice
calling for understanding and preservation of this precious region.
Kansans will have the opportunity to view Steger's presentation, and interact with the explorer at two venues:
- Hutchinson, KS- Fox Theater- February 11th, 7:00 PM
- Overland Park, KS- Johnson County Community College Regnier Center- February 12th, 7:00 PM
Steger will share the stage with J. Drake Hamilton of
Fresh Energy, a nonprofit organization working to lead the transition
to a clean, efficient energy system. Hamilton will present on clean
energy solutions to global warming that will maximize economic
opportunities for the Midwest. Steger and Hamilton will describe how
various sectors of the community can address global warming policy.
"I've
been an eyewitness to global warming, and I've seen the urgent need for
solutions at all levels," Steger said. "We need individuals, businesses
and governments to work together to do their parts to solve this
problem."
The "Eyewitness to Global Warming: Conversation with Polar
Explorer Will Steger" tour is sponsored by four Kansas organizations: Kansas Chapter of the Sierra Club, Oxfam America,
the Climate and Energy Project, and the Kansas Rural Center.
Jim French, Lead Organizer for Oxfam America, an international
development agency, points out that "climate change is having a
devastating effect on the lives of millions of the world's poorest
people as oceans rise and deserts expand. Steger's story of the Arctic
is being repeated in both large and subtle ways around the globe."
Stephanie Cole, Regional Director for the Kansas Sierra Club
stated, "Sierra Club is thrilled to host Steger and Hamilton in our
state to share their experiences with Kansans. The opportunity to
interact with someone who has been there and actually seen the melting
glaciers- I think that will be a powerful experience for Kansans."
Eileen Horn, Community Outreach Coordinator of the Climate and
Energy Project added, "For me, the most powerful part of Steger and
Hamilton's message is their focus on solutions that both mitigate
global warming and stimulate local economies. Yes, global warming is a
threat that Kansans need to address, but the good news is that multiple
solutions already exist- for individuals, businesses, schools,
congregations, and government."
