Alumni E-Newsletter
Fall, 2007
Words From the Alumni Office...
Can you remember the incredible beauty that embraces the COA campus in
autumn? I look out my office window in awe of the contrast between the blue/gray waters of Frenchman's Bay and the warm yellows, browns, reds
and burnt oranges of the foliage that still cling to the trees. It is truly breathtaking.
Fall is a time of transition, a climax of color before a period of rest. The campus
is buzzing with week nine stress and the anticipation of a long winter's break filled with food, festivities and fire.
In this time of climax, we bring you the words, messages, and calls to action of your
peers. A buzz of literary energy that you can crawl into bed with, scrolling our pages from your lap top snug under warm comforters and soft pillows.
In this issue you will find articles about current campus happenings, a link to a humorous student made video on You Tube exploring the concept
of the Real American College, a request for your support for the annual fund (all alumni gifts to the annual fund benefit financial aid), alumni
poetry, opinion editorials and much, much more.
We were thrilled with the incredible number of alumni pieces submitted for this
publication. I encourage you all to send in more work for the next edition due for distribution February, 2008. This also includes the opportunity to
submit your business card for your products, business or organization for the alumni advertising page. On a personal note, I am leaving to
have a baby in December, so all submissions for the next e-newsletter can be emailed directly to Heather Nazarewicz '08 at: hnazarewicz@coa.edu
Please remember, we love hearing from you and we encourage you to send us life
updates, your latest contact information and any feedback or ideas you have regarding how we can better keep you connected and how we can continue to
support you in your continued support for COA. Email me at: milja@coa.edu, or call (207)288-5015 x268.

2007-2008 Annual Appeal
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
by Milja Brecher-DeMuro, alumni relations - development
coordinator
It's that time of year again and we need your support!
Over 85% of current students at COA receive financial aid and unlike many other
private colleges, COA does not have a financial aid endowment fund. Therefore, a large portion of the money we raise through the
annual fund helps subsidize the gap between what students can afford and what education costs. Other areas that
annual fund supports include: heating and light costs, class budgets, staff and faculty salary, committee budgets and much, much more.
This year all alumni annual fund gifts will benefit financial aid.
Please help us attain our alumni annual fund goal of $55,000.00. If
every alumni gave $25 (including graduates and non-graduates), $75,000.00 would benefit financial aid! That's less than it costs
for a evening at home with delivery pizza, a rented movie and drink!
Please make your annual fund contribution today. Gifts of all
amounts DO make a difference! Please give what you can.
On-line donations will be possible very soon. I will send you an announcement.
Mail a check payable to College of the Atlantic to: Development Office, College of
the Atlantic - 105 Eden Street - Bar Harbor, ME 04609
Or contact Jennifer Hughes (207)288-5015 x329 - jhughes@coa.edu
Thank you for your support!

The Era of
Human Ecology
By Tree Sturman COA class of '02
Ernie McMullen always
turned on the radio during life drawing class, or at least he did that year. I cannot remember which station he turned to, but I do remember
him saying that morning that the music was intended "to relax the models." The stupendous irony of his statement sticks with me still to this
day. The class began at 8:30 a.m. and by 9:00 everything changed. It was the morning of the eleventh of September, almost six years ago today.
The events of that day, and of the months and years that followed have, I believe, shepherded in a new era - the Era of Human Ecology.
