COA as a Real American College
By Heather Nazarewicz COA class of '08
In a You Tube video produced by Oliver Bruce '10, College of the
Atlantic is defined as an "Academic Utopia." This humorous parody starts off describing the college in an idealistic
light. COA is referred to as a "place for vegans to unite" and a place "for drug addicts to find classes they can
attend." The video then transitions from this flowery idealism into a critique of typical American colleges by playfully
evaluating what COA lacks as a college. Eric Jacobson '09, narrator of the video and current COA student, asks the question: "What
will it take to make COA a real American college?" This question is answered through interviews featuring faculty Karen Waldron and
Dave Feldman, as well as visiting student William Broussard. Suggested changes toward this seemingly serious, yet anti-goal,
include the development of intercollegiate sports, the introduction of fraternities and sororities, and the destruction of Turrets to rebuild it as a
giant Tostidos bag. This delightful parody is bound to create a few giggles and raise some questions.
