Y-ME Illinois January e-News: Happy New Year!

Cancer Treatment Centers of America to Sponsor Spanish Publication of Y-ME Illinois Brochure

Y-ME Illinois identified the publication of a Spanish brochure as a top priority for the New Year.  We thank Cancer Treatment Centers of America for providing a $7,000 sponsorship to support this critical initiative.

Underserved populations are at risk of receiving poor quality of health care access and medical insurance because of cultural factors such as low English proficiency and lack of acculturation.  These women under utilize screening services and are often diagnosed at later stages of the disease, resulting in a poorer prognosis for breast cancer survival.  Women of underserved populations, including Latino women, have less knowledge because of lack of understandable information which results in more misconceptions and more fatalistic attitudes about breast cancer than other groups of women.

Through marketing materials such as a brochure, Y-ME Illinois seeks to increase breast cancer awareness and early detection in underserved communities, specifically among the Latino population in the Chicagoland area.

A Note from Our Program Staff

Between January and July 2007, we will increase the number of people reached through support groups by 15%.

If you or anyone who would like to attend a support group, or if you know a breast cancer survivor or medical professional who would like to start a support group, please contact Phoebe Harlan at 312.364.9071 or pharlan@y-me.org.

In the 2006-2007 school year, the Just for Teens Program will present in 70 schools, compared to 61 schools in the 2005-2006 school year.

If you or anyone you know is interested in being a Teen Presenter, or if you know a high school where we can present our award winning program, please contact Phoebe Harlan at 312.364.9071 or pharlan@y-me.org .
