Y-ME Illinois welcomes Sara Cohen, Director of
Development
Hi, I’m Sara Cohen, the new Director of Development at Y-ME Illinois. I have a
Bachelor of Arts Degree from Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. I spent nearly 20 years as a business/systems analyst in the corporate world
before making the switch to the nonprofit world 5 years ago.
I come from The Chicago Lighthouse for People Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired where I
was the Corporate and Foundation Relations Manager. I am very excited about my new responsibilities at Y-ME Illinois and look forward to building
relationships that will help Y-ME Illinois continue to provide education, support, and services to people with breast cancer.
In each newsletter, I will address ways in which you can help Y-ME Illinois fulfill its
mission. Please take time to read my IRA Newsflash in this issue. Feel free to email me at scohen@y-me.org with any questions, comments, or
if you wish to make a donation! I wish everyone a safe and blessed holiday season.
Opportunity for Tax-Free IRA Rollover to Charities Ends
December 31, 2007
Are you at least 70 ½ years old? Or know someone who is?
Would you like to meet your mandatory IRA withdrawal requirements tax-free?
Do you not itemize deductions on your income tax, but would like the opportunity to
donate to Y-ME Illinois from your IRA without having to declare the withdrawal as income?
Under the 2006 Pension Protection Act, taxpayers ages 70 ½ and older, at the time
of transfer, can make an IRA rollover gift to charity of up to $100,000 without paying income tax on the IRA funds. Keep in mind that since there is
no income tax, there is also no charitable deduction for these kinds of gifts. However, you can rollover your IRA funds – tax free – to
make a gift to Y-ME Illinois – until December 31, 2007. Contact your IRA fund Administrator for the appropriate rollover forms.
If you would like further information about rolling over your IRA to
make a gift to Y-ME Illinois, contact Sara Cohen, Director of Development, at 312-364-9071 or at scohen@y-me.org

Women’s Health Conference
On November 14th and 15th Y-ME Illinois’ Program
Coordinators attended the Ninth Annual Illinois Women's Health Conference in Oak Brook, Illinois to educate others about the services that Y-ME
Illinois offers and find out what was new in women’s health.
The conference not only provided multiple lectures that stressed the need for healing
the body as much as the soul and mind, the new techniques and research that was presented, but allowed Y-ME Illinois to gain exposure among many new
groups. The conference also featured a session by author Marci Shimoff, who wrote three Chicken Soup for the Soul books. Her presentation
enforced the importance of self-esteem and how women need to live their life with all their heart and soul, helping Y-ME Illinois achieve our mission
to ensure that no one faces breast cancer alone!
Spanish-Speaking Volunteers
Needed!
Y-ME Illinois is beginning to recruit Spanish-speaking volunteers for training to become
facilitators, representatives at health fairs and presenters for Breast Health Awareness workshops. These volunteers will help support the mission of
Y-ME within the Latino population.
Y-ME Illinois has also been making positive connections with St. Anthony, McNeal, and
Mount Sinai hospitals. Each of these organizations requested that we bring Y-ME programs and resources to their facilities.
Y-ME Illinois has started to contact facilities and media in the Chicago land western
suburbs. The goal of our Latino Program Coordinator is to expand our programs to Spanish-speaking breast cancer survivors in this suburban
area. If you live in the Chicagoland area, speak Spanish and would like to become a Y-ME
Illinois volunteer, please email Judy Guitelman at jguitelman@y-me.org . You do not need to be a breast cancer survivor to volunteer.
If you have any questions, please call (312) 364-9071 x13.
Felices Fiestas!!!

Sister Study Looking for Participants
The Sister Study is a nationwide effort to learn how our environment and genes affect the chances of getting
breast cancer.
Women ages 35 to 74 may be eligible to join the Sister Study if their sister (living or deceased), related
to them by blood, had breast cancer; they have never had breast cancer themselves; and they live in the United States or Puerto Rico. Participants
could have had other forms of cancer, but not breast cancer.
The Sister Study follows sound, ethical research practices, and keeps all personal data safe, private and
confidential. Women who join are not asked to take any medicine, visit a medical center, or make any changes to their habits, diet or
daily life. If you’re a woman of color whose sister had breast cancer, your participation in the Sister Study is especially important.
The study particularly needs more women of color and women over age
65.
To register, volunteer or learn more about the Sister Study, visit the web site www.sisterstudy.org. The toll free number is 1-877-4SISTER (877-474-7837).
