The Big Night Out: A Big Thank You!
Thank you to all attendees and volunteers that walked the pink carpet to join us at Union Station in celebration of
survivorship while raising money for Y-ME Illinois!
Tim Green and his jazz quartet kicked off the evening, guiding people through the pink hues and enticing them to
the different indulgence areas. The indulgences featured treats like pink martinis, cheese fondue, chocolates, champagne and popcorn as well as
chair massages, hand massages and fun hair up-dos. A break in the live music provided space for smiling survivors to dance on stage with bright
pink boas to "I Will Survive". Shemekia Copeland, with her dynamic sound, took us to the end of the evening, sending the crowd into a dancing
frenzy.
Congratulations to Jon Tunney, the lucky winner of the 2007 Mini-Cooper. Thanks to everyone that purchased a
raffle ticket in support of our organization.
We appreciate all the support that was shown by the musicians, sponsors, volunteers and attendees. Check our
website to see pictures of the event. We hope to see you all next year! Special thanks to our wonderful sponsors:

Just for Teens Program: Back in
Action
The Y-ME Illinois Just for Teens Program is off to a fast start with 32 schools
signed up for our award-winning presentation. So far this fall, we have 5 news schools added to our roster and 2 schools that we haven’t
presented to in over two years! In October, 10 new presenters were trained to go into schools in the Chicagoland area and give the presentation to
high school senior girls. Congratulations to those new presenters! We are always looking for news
schools to reach! If there is a school that you think would be interested in having the Just for Teens presentation, please call Lyn Kos at

An update from Judy Guitleman: Program Coordinator, Latino Community
As the new program coordinator for the Latino community, I
have been fortunate to participate in two interviews within the last month; one with "Telemundo" (Hispanic T.V) and another with "La Tremenda"
(Hispanic radio). In these interviews I was pleased to be able to discuss the mission of Y-ME and had the opportunity to inform the listeners about
Illinois Breast Cervical Cancer Program.
I was also excited to represent Y-ME at a health fair at Maryville church in Des Plaines. Four Hispanic
consulates from Mexico, Colombia, Guatemala and Venezuela, were in attendance. Once again I was able to make attendees aware of the availability of
free screening for women 40 to 64 years of age. As a result of getting the mission of Y-ME out to the Latino population through these activities,
many people have called the office for information regarding our resources and programs.

Letter from our Program
Coordinator: African American Community
October has been an interesting and busy month for me here at Y-ME
Illinois. I had the opportunity to present to the Chicago Chapter of the Black MBA Association, Inc. where I spoke about Y-ME Illinois’
programs and services, and elaborated on the disparity in Chicago as it relates to breast cancer and African American women. I also had the pleasure
of attending and escorting a 7-week survivor to a support group where I was allowed to listen and meet survivors. I want to thank those
women for allowing me to be a part of their group and share in their fight! I attended a health fair at CNA where I meet lots of women and was able
to inform them about Y-ME Illinois; I look forward to participating in many more and getting the word out about the importance of early detection. In
addition, I've be soliciting volunteers everywhere I go. I cannot emphasize how important it is for African American women and
men to get involve in the fight against breast cancer.

Jude Andrews at Rainbow/PUSH Coalition
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Y-ME Illinois’ Executive Director Jude Andrews was invited
to speak on Rainbow/PUSH Coalition’s nationally televised morning program on October 20th with the Rev. Jesse Jackson. Jude’s
commentary focused on the importance of early detection and awareness within the African American community, highlighting the statistic that breast
cancer mortality rates of African American women in Chicago are 68% higher than in Caucasian women. This is dangerously above the national and state
average and unacceptable. She also reached out to the community, informing women about Y-ME Illinois’ programs, services and resources to get
breast health screenings. Y-ME Illinois would like to thank the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition for inviting us to speak on their program and look forward to
working together to ensure that no one faces breast cancer alone.
