We are pleased to wecome the newest addition to  Y-ME Illinois, Gloria Taylor-Davenport.

Y-ME Illinois Welcomes Gloria Taylor-Davenport!

My name is Gloria Taylor-Davenport and I am very excited to be apart of Y-ME Illinois.  I come to Y-ME with over 20 years experience in the non-profit sector.  During those years, I was fortunate to lead and mentor a number of accounting professionals while developing self-growth.  Currently, I am a board member and treasurer of Salvation Church of God, which gives me great pleasure.  I hope to bring my financial expertise to this organization as well as retain for myself the empowering information and support that Y-ME Illinois has to offer.  It is my desire that I will be able to help grow this organization financially, allowing Y-ME Illinois to ensure that no one faces breast cancer alone for many years to come.  I consider myself blessed to be a part of such a dedicated staff that is committed to helping women and men everywhere.

You can contact Gloria Taylor-Davenport at

Associate Board News

The 2nd Annual Streak Chicago Pink event has been set for Saturday, September 15th at Vines on Clark.  We'll honor the 2007 Pink Streak marathon runners and raise funds for Y-ME Illinois.  It will be a night filled with food, drinks and fun including raffles and entertainment. We are looking for enthusiastic men and women to help plan this fantastic event (which last year raised over $13,000 for Y-ME Illinois)!  Please join us for a kick-off planning meeting on Monday, July 16th at 7pm at Vines (3554 N. Clark St.). Positions are still available for both committee chairs and committee members. If you’re interested in learning more about this event but can’t make the kick-off meeting, please contact Kristin Kuehn at

Kristin.e.kuehn@accenture.com.

The mission of the Y-ME Illinois Associate Board is to impact the fight against breast cancer through volunteering, increasing awareness and raising funds to support the programs and services of the Illinois Affiliate of Y-ME. If you are interested in learning more about the Associate Board, please contact Natalie Long at nslong1@yahoo.com.

Pink Streak Marathon Team members have already raised over $26,000

Check out our runners at www.firstgiving.com/y-me.  There are only 98 days until the marathon and they need our support!  Think of them this weekend as they run 9+ miles in training.

If you want to be a part of the marathon without running the 26.2 miles, sign up to be a Water Station volunteer!  Please contact Laura McDougal at lmcdougal@y-me.org if you are interested.

Rose Sajuan with her sons, Michael and Andre.

The Power of Corporate Partnerships: Cancer Treatment Centers of America

When Rose Sajuan was diagnosed with breast cancer she was the care taker for her mother, had one son getting ready to graduate from high school, another in Army training, and a daughter working in Lake Forest.  Despite all the activity, Rose had a nagging feeling that it was time to get a mammogram.  As Rose explains “God put it in my heart to schedule the appointment.”

Once the appointment was scheduled, everything moved quickly.  Saturday she went to the physician for a follow-up on her mammography. Tuesday she had a biopsy performed on a lump that was removed from her breast.  When Rose returned to the doctor on Thursday and the physician began by asking where her husband was, she was prepared for the worst.

Rose received care at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) and enjoys her status today as an eleven year breast cancer survivor.  She credits her supportive family and two close friends that stood by and helped her get through the experience.

Currently, she is an active volunteer in the cancer community and is a recognized “Cancer Fighter” with CTCA.  When Rose, who is of Puerto Rican descent, learned that CTCA and Y-ME Illinois forged a partnership to create a Spanish version of the Y-ME Illinois brochure she was pleased and stated that “together you can make such an impact!”  She also added that “in the Hispanic culture the feeling about breast cancer was very hush, hush.  It is considered taboo for women to touch their bodies and some have believed that the disease is a punishment from God.”

Rose’s comments reflect the importance of providing translated information to ethnic communities and the ongoing need to continue to break down cultural barriers.  Corporate partnerships like this are proof that working together, and enhancing our respective missions, we can better ensure that no one faces breast cancer alone.

Update: Rose’s daughter now works as the secretary to the Birthing Unit of Highland Park Hospital.  Both of her sons are stationed at Fort Campbell in Kentucky and presently live just 5 houses away from each other!  Michael is with the 887th Engineers and Andre is with the Airborne Unit attached to Special Forces. At this time, Michael is presently overseas fighting in Iraq and Andre is scheduled to leave for Iraq again in October. Y-ME Illinois extends our sincere gratitude for their noble commitment to our country.
