Cradle of America: Four Centuries of Virginia History

...traces major themes in the history of Virginia, dating back to Jamestown and before, with the first chapter, "Elizabethan Virginia," focusing on Virginia's earlier origins at Roanoke Island.

As the title indicates, Cradle of America positions Virginia history in national terms as well as state.  And going beyond traditional perspectives, it emphasizes conflict and change, exploring the relationships between Virginia's diverse regions and people.

Peter Wallenstein has taught history at Virginia Tech since 1983.  His research and teaching emphasize the history of the U.S. South.  His books include Tell the Court I Love My Wife:  Race, Marriage, and Law--An American History (2002); Blue Laws and Black Codes:  Conflict, Courts, and Change in Twentieth-Century Virginia (2004); the co-authored From VPI to State University:  President T. Marshall Hahn Jr. and the Transformation of Virginia Tech, 1962-1974 (2004); a co-edited collection of essays, Virginia's Civil War (2005); and, most recently, Cradle of America:  Four Centuries of Virginia History (2007).
