CFB Happenings

Second Annual Sort and Mingle for Singles:  For the second year, CFB will host a volunteer Valentine event.  On Wednesday, February 13, you can join other single volunteers in helping to sort non-perishable food for distribution.  Refreshments will be provided by Terri Corning for The Pampered Chef.

This event will take place at our East Haven warehouse at 150 Bradley Street from 5-8PM on Wednesday, February 13.  For details and to RSVP, contact Kim Damien at (203) 469-5000, ext. 311, or kdamien@ctfoodbank.org.

Anti-Valentine’s Day Knock Out:  If you find that you're not in the Valentine's Day spirit, Fighting Fitness will give you one professional round, two minutes in all, on a punching bag to let out your frustrations.  All you need to do is bring a financial or food donation for Connecticut Food Bank.  Open 8 to 8, Fighting Fitness is on 367 Boston Post Road in Orange.

Stop & Shop's Food for Friends a Success:  Connecticut Food Bank thanks Stop & Shop Supermarkets for its generous donation of $73,000 raised during its holiday Food for Friends campaign.  Shoppers added $1, $3 or $5 to their bills to purchase paper turkeys that were then placed around the store.  We thank all involved for their generosity.

Barilla Cookbook to Benefit Food Banks:  For the second straight year, Barilla is joining America's Second Harvest - The Nation's Food Bank Network in the fight against hunger.  Throughout February, Barilla will allow you to download "The Celebrity Italian Table Cookbook" for free from their website.  Barilla will donate $1 per download to America's Second Harvest, and could donate up to $100,000 overall.

About the Book:  Barilla rounded up celebrities Marisa Tomei, Debra Messing, Stanley Tucci, Chris Daughtry and Natalie Portman to provide recipes for Chef Mario Batali, from which he created six three-course meals.  Photos of entertaining expert David Tutera's table designs for each meal are also featured.

Hunger in the News:

Civic Action Needed on Farm Bill:  The House and the Senate are putting together their committees to reconcile the two versions of the 2007 Farm Bill.  Though conferees have yet to be named, now is the time to take action with your local representatives and senators to ensure strong support for funding of emergency food programs.

America's Second Harvest's Hunger Action Center has letters you can sign and electronically deliver to your local Congressional Representatives and Senators.  Please log on today and register with the Hunger Action Center in order to help Connecticut Food Bank provide hungry people with food.

Success Story

Hunt to Feed Program Donates Lean Venison:  Protein is one of the most highly sought after items in the food bank system.  Venison is a lean and healthy source of protein made available to hungry people all across the state thanks to Connecticut hunters.  The Hunt to Feed program, which raises funds to cover processing, allows Connecticut hunters to donate venison to CFB. The campaign gave 1,208 pounds of venison, nearly 5,000 portions of protein, to CFB between September 2007 and January 2008.

For information on how to donate funds or donate a deer go to Hunt to Feed's website

Get Interactive

Walk in the Shoes of a Third World Farmer: Many people around the world must subsist on what they grow on their plot of land.  Often, their land is subjected to taxes, raiders, and can be the site of civil war.  Meanwhile, disease and drought can take their toll on families.

Third World Farmer is an educational interactive game that guides you through the trials of keeping your family alive and well within very limited means as you make the difficult choices of which crops or livestock to raise in harsh circumstances.
