Thank you to everyone who took CFB's "Food Stamp Challenge" during the month of June.
Designed to raise awareness about the issue of hunger in our communities, the Challenge also generated press coverage and calls to legislators about
the pending "Farm Bill," which includes federal authorization for the Food Stamp Program (see story below). To read the journals of
participants in CFB's Challenge, click here. To read about "Food

Hunger in the News
On June 14th, the 2007 "Farm Bill" that includes nutrition funding cleared the U.S. House of
Representative’s Agriculture Subcommittee with improvements to the Food Stamp Program and emergency feeding system. The bill,
re-authorized every five years, includes $5.4 billion in new investments for the Food Stamp Program (to be renamed the "Secure Supplemental
Nutrition Assistance Program") and The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), which provides commodity foods like meat and
vegetables for free to low-income Americans. Part of the new provisions are contingent on financing made available for the Farm Bill reserve fund.
The bill is being considered by the full House Committee before the July 4th recess. For more about the Farm Bill, click here.

According to a new study, "The Economic Cost of Domestic Hunger," commissioned
by the Sodexho Foundation, the 'cost burden' of hunger in the United
States is, at a minimum, $90 billion annually. As the researchers state, "This means that on average each person living in the U.S. pays $300
annually for the hunger bill. On a household basis this cost is $800 a year." Using calculations similar to those of analyzing health care
cost burdens, researchers conclude that by "strengthening existing federal nutrition programs by about $10-$12 billion over current spending," we
could virtually end hunger in our nation. To read about the study and the
methodology used, click here.
