2009: APLD’s 20th Anniversary- There is a lot in store for APLD in 2009 to celebrate the success of our association over the past 20 years. Two big events we will use to recognize this achievement are the 2009 Annual Conference to be held in Portland, OR from July 12-18, 2009 AND a trip to Italy. This is an additional trip to celebrate APLD’s 20th Anniversary in a most enjoyable, educational experience.    Any APLD member wanting to register for Italy must be fully registered and attend the APLD’s 2009 Annual Conference. Many details are still being decided for Italy; however, all APLD members will be advised when decisions are finalized. Space will be limited for this spectacular tour. If you have any questions please contact Patrick Bones, APLD, chairman of the APLD Italy planning committee, at brightonlandplan@hotmail.com. Other planning Committee Members include: Judy Nauseef, APLD, President-Elect; Robin Williams, FAPLD; Greg Pierceall, University of Illinois; Gerald Miraldi; Myrna Dowsett, APLD; and Dan Maffei  National Program Chair.

  • A news release on the use of landscape and design techniques at home to conserve fresh water supplies.
  • The first edition of a guide to making the most of your APLD membership. The inaugural edition looks at how to raise your profile and the profile of APLD locally.
  •  The first issue of The Designer in a repositioned format that helps APLD members network and grow their businesses, and helps advertisers and sponsors to grow relationships with the APLD community.
  • A visual environmental area for consumers on apld.org, to which consumers are directed from links in the news release and the newsletter.

AQUASCAPE, INC. AND CERTIFIED AQUASCAPE CONTRACTORS BRING FUTURE OF WATER GARDENING TO EPCOT® CENTER

For the sixth year in a row, Aquascape and a group of Certified Aquascape Contractors (CAC) teamed up to create water features at the Epcot® International Flower and Garden Festival. This year Aquascape and its group of CACs focused on the future of water gardening and constructed six water features that highlight current and future landscape trends. The range of water features included an 11’x16’ ecosystem pond, four decorative fountains created with the AquaBasin™ reservoir, and a prototype rainwater harvest storage system.  In addition to these outdoor features, a Pondless® Waterfall was constructed inside the Flower and Garden Festival’s reception center using the AquaBasin™…For more information on Aquascape’s products and its Certified Aquascape Contractor program, log onto www.aquascapedesigns.com or call 1-866-877-6637 (US) or 866-766-3426 (CAN).”

NEW TEXAS LAW TOUGHENS UP IRRIGATION STANDARDS. Starting January 2009, Irrigators in Texas will have to incorporate a few more ‘to-dos’ in their pursuit to install an irrigation system. H.B. 1656, a bill mandating all cities with populations of 20,000 or more to regulate irrigators and irrigation systems, was signed into Texas law June 2007. The new law, requiring the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to adopt rules which will go into effect January 2009, proposes that: each participating city adopts standards and specifications for designing, installing, and operating irrigation systems; irrigation installations receive onsite supervision by a licensed individual; and all new installations undergo inspection and approval by a licensed irrigation inspector (from the municipality or associated water district) or licensed plumbing inspector.” To learn more, visit www.landscapemanagement.net/landscape/Green+Industry+News/New-Texas-law-toughens-up-irrigation-standards/ArticleStandard/Article/detail/511363?contextCategoryId=465.
