The Detroit Lions Courage House

The Detroit Lions Courage House was formed more than 13 years ago to support HAVEN. Each year the Detroit Lions and HAVEN join together to provide a wonderful evening to raise money for those who cannot help themselves.

This year’s event will take place on Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at 5:30pm at Ford Field. The evening includes dinner, a silent auction, and an opportunity to have a celebrity join you and your guests for dinner! What could be better? How about hearing from two NFL greats?!

The Detroit Lions will honor one of its own – Pro Football Hall of Famer Charlie Sanders – with the Community Courage Award and the guest speaker that evening will be former Baltimore Colt and Lions’ defensive lineman Joe Ehrmann.

Tickets are still available. For ticket information or to make reservations, call 313-216-4171. Individual tickets are $200.

Lynn Portnoy Holiday Shopping Event

Get into the holiday spirit. Do your holiday shopping at one of the area’s premier upscale boutiques and support HAVEN in the process.

Lynn Portnoy will hold a Holiday Shopping Benefit at her boutique in Southfield, located at 29260 Franklin Road (between 13 Mile Road and Northwestern Hwy. on the ground floor of the Claymoor Apartment Building). A $25 donation and 10% of all sales will be donated to HAVEN.

Guests will enjoy hassle free gift shopping in a delightful atmosphere featuring refreshments, complimentary gift-wrapping, personal assistance and plentiful parking (on east side of building). Ms. Portnoy’s unique shop features items ranging from very reasonable stocking stuffers to special holiday attire. Guests can also purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win unique holiday gifts. This special holiday shopping event will greatly support HAVEN’s continuing efforts to end the cycle of domestic and sexual violence in our communities.

Please contact Lynn Portnoy at 248-353-2900 for more information or to reserve a ticket.

National Domestic Violence Volunteer Attorney Network

At the beginning of the month, Jewish Women International (JWI) launched the Legal Project to empower abuse victims to both look after their own safety and interests, and to find affordable attorneys equipped to do the same. With your support, we can build this initiative to serve women in need with legal knowledge and representation that could save their lives.

Sign on and be counted among those supporting the creation of the National Domestic Violence Volunteer Attorney Network – legislation introduced by Senators Joe Biden and Arlen Specter, now before the Senate Committee on the Judiciary.

We are pleased to tell you that nationwide support for this measure is widespread and strong! At this point more than 1,500 people from across the country have signed the petition.

Take action today – help reach the goal of 5,000 names.  Add your name to the list (if you haven’t already), and send this e-mail to your network of friends to garner even more support for JWI’s Legal Project and the pending legislation. View their names - and many of their stories - on the JWI website.

Sign the petition. Support legislation to create a volunteer attorney network.

Gift Giveaway

Each year, HAVEN makes holiday wishes come true at our Gift Giveaway.

All families helped by HAVEN's programs in 2006/07 are eligible to receive gifts for each member of their household. Unwrapped contributions are collected for three days (December 16 - 18th) and put on display. On Thursday, December 19th, clients will be able to go "shopping" for the items they need for their families. Wrapping materials are also provided for the families to add their personal finishing touches.

This event needs the entire community to help make it a success. If you'd like to donate gifts or volunteer your time, please contact Belle Kleinberg at bkleinberg@haven-oakland.org or 248.334.1284 x659.
