Did You Know...

  • Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury for women between the ages of 15 – 44 .

  • 1 in 3 Michigan families experience domestic violence.

  • A total of 17,572 clients participated in HAVEN's services in 2006.

In The News

In the past two weeks the media has been very focused on the recent murder/homicide involving World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) wrestler Chris Benoit. Benoit murdered his wife, son and then killed himself in this highly profiled case.

Much has been said about his steroid use, the health of his child and very brief mention has been made about a "troubled" marriage. In all but a few brief references the words domestic violence have not been used. Steroid use has often been used to explain his rage.

What hasn't been part of the national dialogue is the prolific and graphic use within the WWE of violence towards women. This form of "entertainment" relies on the use of violence towards women in every television episode - male wrestlers are shown using intimidation, fear and control over female wrestlers/entertainers to the roar of the crowd (mostly all young males). Several of these entertainers are actually married couples.

In several of the episodes involving one couple you see the husband grabbing her, throwing her down, pulling her across the room by her hair, spanking her, calling her names, hitting her with a chair and stating "Wait till you get home @#$#@". I'm not so sure this is the modeling of a husband or father young men should be exposed to each Friday night.

The WWE over the years, while calling itself entertainment, is a consistent source of demonstrating male domination, control and violence. It is also consistently, week in and out, one of the most watched shows on television.

Interestingly enough, we haven't seen a national call for the show to be pulled from TV, for announcers to be fired, or to boycott program sponsors. While we all sit back, our young men are cheering on the violence, all under the veiled premise that it isn't real, its only entertainment.

HAVEN Highlight

HAVEN and Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County are part of a pilot project through Habitat for Humanity of Michigan, the Michigan Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence (MCASDV) and the Michigan Domestic Violence Prevention and Treatment Board (MDVPTB). This pilot project will take place in five communities (Detroit, Oakland County, Genesee County, Muskegon County, and Kent County). Each of the five  communities must designate that 10% of the Habitat homes built in their communities in 2007 are homes for domestic violence survivors.

Several national surveys point to reserach indicating that there is a strong correlation between domestic violence and homelessness. A survey of the United States Conference of Mayors in 2003 indicated that 44% of these individuals identified domestic violence as a primary cause of homelessness. In 1998, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) conducted a survey that indicated 97% of homeless women have experienced severe physical or sexual abuse at some point in their lives. The National Resource Center on Domestic Violence responded to the link between homelessness and domestic violence in 1999 by stating that victims of domestic violence often return to their abusers because they cannot find long-term housing.

The partnership between HAVEN and Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County will allow four survivors to get new homes this year. This partnership will allow at least four families to live without fear. HAVEN identifies and recruits survivors to apply. Then Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County conducts a screening of the recruits and ultimately selects the candidates.

We are pleased to annouce that our first Habitat House was presented in June to Renee' Shorter. According to Renee', being the recipient of a brand-new house is only the beginning of the good things that await her.
