Join Us in Making Summer Dreams Come True

HAVEN is searching for partners to allocate $3,268 for a matching grant for the Children’s Summer Dreams Program.

Summer Dreams, a fundraising campaign of the Detroit Free Press Children First initiative, is a dollar-for-dollar matching program for youth programs in the Detroit area. The program has been bringing memorable experiences to children for more than a decade. In collaboration with the Skillman Foundation, Summer Dreams has provided almost $11.2 million for Michigan Children’s Summer Recreation Programs since it began in 1993.

The goals of HAVEN’s Residential Youth Program are to help children understand the violence in their lives while giving them the skills to identify and appropriately express their feelings.

Summer is one of the busiest times at the shelter. HAVEN’s experience is that women are more apt to flee their violent homes when their children do not need to be uprooted from school. Children reach a safe environment at HAVEN’s shelter, but it is new, strange and stressful for children because they have more time on their hands.

The Residential Youth Program has unique opportunities to provide new situations, tools and support to meet the children’s needs. To donate, volunteer, or mentor contact Belle Kleinberg at 248-334-1284 ext. 659 or bkleinberg@haven-oakland.org. To match this grant contact Tracy Thomas at 248-334-1284 x344 or email her at

tthomas@haven-oakland.org.

The two-room library features hundreds of new and donated children's books; inspirational plaques with sayings such as "discover," "dream," "believe," and "imagine"; colorful artwork, three solid oak bookcases; a child-sized rocking chair; and a colorful study table with a talking globe.

The adjacent media room features a television equipped with a both a DVD player and VCR, dozens of children's and teen videos and DVDs, a new computer and a beige leather couch.

Thank you to both of these organizations for for coming together to assist those we serve.
