It’s true that PCs enable many
environmentally friendly practices like telecommuting and reducing paper waste. But, did you know that a computer is about five
times more energy-expensive to make that a car or refrigerator?
Because there is a witches’ brew of
chemicals and heavy metals in a computer, it’s important to think twice before you dump your old machine.
What to do with your old
computer?
- Upgrade -- A good choice if all you need is a bit more memory.
- Reuse – Give your PC to a friend or a charity. You may get a tax credit.
- Recycle – Some manufacturers will recycle your old machine when you buy a new one.
If one million people reused or upgraded
their computers, we would save 265,000 tons of fossils fuels. Visit http://eiae.org or http://greendisk.com/ for more information about recycling electronic
items.
